Locals enjoy weekend of racing

Aug. 2—A number of Spring Lake Yacht Club members took home sailing victories over the weekend in races held by the West Michigan Yachting Association.

In the largest divisions of competitors, it was the McNeils that had a leg up on the field. Spring Lake's Ben and Cam McNeil, along with Phoebe Saunders, won the C Scow division at the WMYA's Championship Regatta, which was hosted by SLYC.

They finished just ahead of a team of Scott Harestad, Amy Hough and Beth Windemuller, also of SLYC, with other local teams making up most of the top 10. Cam McNeil was a winner in the MC Scow category for single-manned boats, while the junior Butterfly division was controlled by the Eggerts, Nyle edging out Max for top spot over four days of racing. Charlie Molesta also won the Optimist category with five race wins.

Good weather meant six races could be held over four days of competition in Spring Lake, one of the rotating hosts for the WMYA's annual regatta. Their 2020 event was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
