Local Sports: Jefferson wrestling wins invite crown; Huron runner-up

GRASS LAKE − Jefferson took first place out of 22 teams Saturday at the Grass Lake Invitational with 262 points. New Boston Huron was runner-up with 217.

The Bears had four champions with Ryder Mulherin (126), John Allen (138), Carter Simota (144), and Seth Minney (190). Martre Pearson (165) and Nathan Masserant (215) finished second.

Taking third place were Daniel Allen (106), Tyler Vanderpool (113), Anthony Cousino (165), and Malachi Pribyl (175). In fourth were Isaac Masserant (120) and Kameron Woiderski (157), and Gabe Hall placed fifth at heavyweight.

Winners for Huron were Carson Gemmel (113), Jason Downs (120), Drew Ladach (150), Wyatt Marentette (215), and Josh Buettner (285).

Downs avenged one of his three losses this season in the semifinals and defeated Hanover-Horton's AJ Fielder in the finals. Fielder is the No. 2-ranked wrestler in the state in Division 4. Ladach and Marentette also finished off ranked wrestlers in the finals, while Gemmel and Buettner won in the finals with pins.

Other placers for Huron were Eric Radulescu (4th, 126), Landon Julio (4th, 144), Josh Graybeal (5th, 144), Daniel Hubbard (5th, 165), Josh Hubbard (6th, 132), and Jordan Matsos (6th, 138).

John Nolan (3rd, 190), RJ Cicero (4th, 175), Ryan Joyce (5th, 126), Malachi Rodriguez (6th, 150), and Drew Perchard (6th, 215) wrestled well for Erie Mason. The Eagles finished in eighth place with 73 points.

Mason's girls wrestled well at the Warren Mott invitational. Ann Marie Gessner was first at 130 and Elliott Gessner finished runner-up at 145.

PREP WRESTLING

Bedford back strong

OREGON, Ohio − Bedford had a full lineup at its disposal as it finished 5-0 at the Oregon Clay Dual Tournament Saturday.

"We had a full-strength lineup for the first time in a few weeks," said Vogel, whose team improved to 27-6. "I thought we wrestled very well this weekend. We are starting to look like the team I know we can be."

Bedford defeated Avon (72-6), Firelands (66-12), Madison (45-21), Clyde (57-18), and Clay (63-16)

Going 5-0 for the Mules were Tristan King (106), Jack Nigh (157), Robbie Gossard (190), Connor Green (215), and Chase Norbury (285), while Brock Jandasek (132) was 4-0 and Nathan Dotson (165) 3-0.

Noah Benoe (138), Austin Meszaros (150), and Ethan Manger (175) finished 4-1.

Monroe goes 2-3

ALLEN PARK − Monroe finished 2-3 Saturday at the Allen Park Robert Lloyd Memorial with wins over Melvindale, 45-30, and Airport, 57-22. The Trojans lost matches against Allen Park (42-36), Birmingham Brother Rice (43-30), and Algonac (57-24).

Adrian Rincon had a great day at heavyweight, going 5-0 with four pins. Logan Caudill (190) also went 5-0 and recorded three pins, Tommy Honeycutt (138) went 4-0 with three pins, and Tim Murphy (144) was 4-1 with three pins.

Monroe moved to 18-10 overall.

Given takes second

LESLIE – Flat Rock’s Andrew Given took second place at 150 pounds in the Leslie Blackhawk Invitational Saturday.

Flat Rock finished 15th in the team standings with 37.5 points. New Lothrop took the title with 159.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Ida wins 10th

IDA − Ida dialed up the pressure Saturday afternoon to shut down Adrian Madison.

The Blue Streaks led 14-12 after the first quarter but then held Madison to just 4 more points before halftime. A 13-8 run for Ida in the third quarter helped the Blue Streaks pull away.

Jessica Schrader scored 26 points to power Ida (10-5).

"Ida was able to get its press working again this afternoon, which led to several transition baskets," Ida coach Tim Leonard said. "Jessica Schrader did a nice job of finishing off the steals and turnovers."

Reese Hennessey added a career-best 10 points, including 8 in the second half. She finished a perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the floor.

Madison won the junior varsity game 42-37.

Bobcats stop slide

OREGON, Ohio − Madelyn Thomas helped Whiteford get off to a great start with two 3-pointers in the first quarter Saturday as the Bobcats snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 49-26 win over Toledo Cardinal Stritch.

Jessica Ulery scored 14 points to lead the Bobcats and Emily Hill chipped in with 8. Eight different players scored for the Bobcats (4-9).

“We’ve moved a few people around in their positions lately and I think they are finally stepping into those roles nicely,” said Bobcat interim coach Shauna Rasor.

Annie Gapp had a good game on the boards with 10 rebounds.

Clements leads Huron

NEW BOSTON − Lila Clements scored 17 points to lead New Boston Huron to a 47-44 win over Milan Friday night.

A back-and-forth contest saw Milan leading 12-10 at the end of the first and Huron taking a 22-21 advantage into halftime. Tied heading into the fourth, Huron outscored Milan 14-11.

Markeyla McCray led Milan with 15 points and Malea Wourman added 11.

Clinton tops Whiteford

SYLVANIA, Ohio – Whiteford lost for the second time in two days − this time to the team in second place in the Lenawee County Athletic Association as Clinton won 71-57 Saturday.

Whiteford trailed by just four at halftime, but Clinton outscored the Bobcats 24-15 in the third quarter to pull away.

Evan Parker scored 15 points and Luke Rasor 12. Lincoln Joerin chipped in with 8 points and Noah Stevens 6 for Whiteford, which slipped to 9-5 overall.

SMCC rules Downriver

TRENTON − St. Mary Catholic Central excelled on both sides of the ice Saturday to defeat Downriver Unified 9-1.

Robert Colyer and Jack Lisker each had a goal and two assists to lead the Falcons with 3 points apiece. Riley DeSarbo scored a pair of unassisted goals in the opening period, and Nick Rakoczy and Jason Hawkins each recorded a goal and an assist.

Ian Bird also scored for SMCC and Dan Neubauer posted two assists. Pete Provost earned the win in goal with 21 saves.

Christian Zaddock made 34 saves through the first two periods for Downriver Unified and Caleb Moran came on in the third with five saves. Casey Sullivan scored the team's lone goal with an assist from Brady Deckert.

Huntoon leads Carlson

CHELSEA – Charlie Huntoon scored twice to lead Gibraltar Carlson past Western-Pinckney Saturday.

Jacob Monette recorded a goal and an assist and Drake Dietz and Brett Whitten had the other goals for the 12-7-1 Marauders. Isaac Kolasz made 26 saves.

Big game for Trythall

WESTLAND – Jack Trythall recorded two goals and two assists to lead New Boston United to a 5-3 win over Thumb Area Legion Saturday night.

Bazel added a goal and two assists, Harry Dembowski notched a goal and an assist and Brendon Whitlow scored a goal. Brandon Powers turned aside 27 shots for 11-6 New Boston.
