Local Sports: New Boston hockey earns second win over SMCC in a month

New Boston United and St. Mary Catholic Central played a competitive, high-scoring game to open the 2022-23 ice hockey season.

Nearly a month later, not much has changed.

New Boston built a big lead and then held off a furious rally by SMCC to win 7-5 Wednesday.

The two sides traded eight goals in the second period after New Boston took a 2-0 lead in the first. SMCC cut the lead to 2-1 before New Boston scored four straight to make it 6-1.

"Then (we) played sloppy defense and allowed SMCC to get back into game with three straight goals in second period," New Boston coach Bob Murray said.

Both sides scored once more in the third.

Bazel Wolf (2 goals, 3 assists) and Harry Dembowski (2 goals, 2 assists) led New Boston. Jake Trythall, Kenny Gribble, and Tyler Oliver also scored for New Boston Huron, while Gribble (2), Matthew Croteau (2), Oliver, Brendon Whitlow, and Ethan Laurain had assists.

Logan Moran made 34 saves to earn the win. New Boston improved to 5-2 overall.

Riley DeSarbo had 3 goals and an assist to lead SMCC, and Daniel Neubauer scored twice. Griffin Worden had 3 assists, Jason Hawkins and Owen McLaughlin recorded two helpers apiece, and Mason Ivey added an assist.

Goaltender Peter Provost made 45 saves.

The Falcons fell to 0-7 overall.

PREP WRESTLING

Airport wins big

LINCOLN PARK – Jack Mills placed seventh in the state for Division 2 last season.

The Airport wrestler has his goals set higher for this season.

Mills got his junior season off to a roaring start Wednesday by scoring a convincing win over the No. 5-ranked grappler in Division 1, beating Trave’air Barbour of Warren Cousino 5-3.

“It was a good start to the season,” Airport coach Jon Morris said of his 165-pounder. “He got the first takedown and controlled the match very well.”

Airport’s entire team started well in Morris's first match as coach. Morris is a 2015 Airport graduate.

The Jets beat Cousino 43-24 and Dearborn Divine Child in the Lincoln Park Quad as Mills, Kenny Wingate (106), Zachary VanBuskirk (120), Jacob VanBuskirk (126), Isaac Kemp (165), and Tristan Philbeck (215) all won twice.

“We’re looking really strong,” Morris said. “We had 10 total pins between both duals and gave up very little points. Our conditioning was strong. It was a good start to the season.”

Jefferson tops Allen Park

Jefferson wrestlers recorded five pins Wednesday to defeat Allen Park 42-20 and deliver a victory for Ryan Nadeau in his head coaching debut.

Josh Allen (138), Carter Simota (150), Anthony Cousino (165), Seth Minney (190), and Nathan Masserant (215) won by fall. Other Bear wins were from Ty Rose (126), Ryder Mulherin (132), Martre Pearson (157), and Malachi Pribyl (175).

Flat Rock splits

ONSTED – It was a split decision for Flat Rock on opening night Wednesday as it beat Onsted 60-18 and fell 48-27 to Addison.

Andrew Given (165), Jayden Ritchie (144) and Nicholas Dropiewski (113) went 2-0 for the Rams.

“Great first time out for many first-year wrestlers,” Flat Rock coach Rogelio Aguliera said. “Expecting great things as the season progresses.”

Huron sweeps quad

DEARBORN − New Boston Huron won twice at the Dearborn Quad Wednesday against Dearborn, 51-21, and Dearborn Fordson, 54-28.

Going 2-0 were Cami Krzciuk, Eric Radulescu, Drew Ladach, Daniel Hubbard, Wyatt Marentette, and Josh Buettner. Steven Polocoser and Isaac Smith were 1-0 sharing matches.

"Not bad for the first couple duals, but there’s a lot of room for improvement," Huron coach Logan Ritchie said.

PREP SWIMMING

Milan splits meet

MILAN − Milan split a pair of meets Tuesday, defeating Erie Mason-Ida 97-76 and falling to Adrian 105-69. Adrian swept the meet with a 119-58 victory over Erie Mason-Ida 119-58.

Winning for the Big Reds were Ben Heikka (500 free), Steven Gottardi (diving), and the 400 free relay of Ben Heikka, Zach Heikka, Same Kennedy and Gavin Kruise.

Zach Heikka hit a state cut in the backstroke and Kruise came up just short of qualifying in the butterfly. Other strong swims came from Gunnar Kruise, Elias Hobbs, Samuel Klien, Parker Prior, Matthew Bowman, Davis Vandergrift, Sean Cook, Landen Ison, Evan Miller, and Ty Neuvirth.

"Our new guys continue to develop and swam very well for a first dual meet," Milan coach Dan Heikka said. "Our returners are ahead of where they started last year, and we will do what we do, which is to show up each day to get better."

Mason Reynolds, Cameron Tross, Lucas Moore, Aaron Koehn, Garrett Wall, and Kaleb Manor swam well for Erie Mason-Ida.

Dundee nips Woodhaven

WOODHAVEN − Dundee opened its dual meet season with a 94-89 win over Woodhaven Tuesday.

Trevor Schroeder (50 free, 100 free) and Drew Bylow (200 free, 500 free) led the way, winning a pair of races and qualifying for state. Other individual victories came from TK Westbrook (butterfly, backstroke) and John Swisher (200 IM).

The Vikings also won the 200 medley relay (Westbrook, Jacob Gerwick, Schroeder, Swisher) and the 200 free relay (Schroeder, Dallas Bensch, Swisher, Bylow).

PREP BOWLING

Monroe shuts out Pinckney

Monroe's girls opened the league season with a 28-2 win over Ypsilanti Lincoln Wednesday with hopes of claiming the Southeastern Conference Red title this season.

"This was a big win for us," Monroe coach Eric Pillette said. "We only lost three meets last season and two were to Ypsi Lincoln. This puts us on the right path for a SEC Red title."

Alexis Woolridge-Lang (206) and Patricia Reaume (201) led the Trojans.

Lincoln won the boys match 21-9. Monroe's Evan Eagle (244) and LJ Robertson (231) bowled high games.

The Trojans opened the season strong Tuesday against Pinckney with a 30-0 win for the boys and 24.5-5.5 for the girls.

Eagle rolled nine straight strikes to open his second individual game, finishing 199-264−463. Robertson also had a 463 series (253, 210). Woolridge-Lang (190) and Teagan Pillette (174) led the girls.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Bedford wins two

TEMPERANCE − Bedford seventh grade improved to 10-1 with a 34-12 win over Monroe Wednesday. Drew Billick scored 10 points, and Kyle Stark and Gabe Rarrick led in assists.

Bedford eighth grade won 27-16. Corbin Miller and Evan Gartee led the scoring, and Hussein Salami and Jackson Harman also played well.
