LOCAL ROUNDUP: Wolk's blast lifts Lady Cougars past Crestwood

May 12—Olivia Wolk scored the tying run in the top of the seventh inning, then drilled a game-winning three-run homer in the eighth as the Lady Cougars knocked off host Crestwood in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 softball game Tuesday in Wright Twp.

The Comets' three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth put Hazleton Area in 3-2 hole heading to its final at-bat, but Wolk led off with a single and came home on Kelsie Peters' game-tying double.

Wolk's blast in the eighth enabled the Lady Cougars to win for the fourth time in five games.

Wolk finished with a home run and single and Peters had a double and single to lead Hazleton Area. Caitlyn Katchur and Gianna Gombeda both singled twice.

For Crestwood, Molly Truszkowski smacked a two-run double and single and Brooke Aton had two singles.

Brianna Kennedy (four strikeouts, one walk) was the winning pitcher for the Lady Cougars in relief of Ashley Seiwell. Jessica Koptcho (six strikeouts, seven walks) was tagged with the loss.

In Foster Twp. Tuesday, Kaylee Witner pitched a three-inning perfect game to lead MMI to the non-league victory. The junior struck out seven of the nine batters that she faced.

the Lady Preppers scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, broke the game wide open with a nine-run second inning, then invoked the PIAA's mercy rule with four more in the home third.

Irene Altmiller, Grace Warner and Witner paced the winners' 15-hit attack with a double and two singles apiece, with Warner knocking in three runs. Gina Galada added two singles and three RBI, Jackie Snyder singled twice and drove in three runs and Sydney Kohl scored two runs and had two RBI.

Morgan Dinger pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out 11 and walking two, as North Schuylkill defeated Lehighton in a Schuylkill League Division I game.

Joslin Stitzer led the Spartans at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs. Violet Ryan went 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored.

Maddie Hall added a single, a double two RBIs and two runs scored for North Schuylkill, while Emilee Slotcavage was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Johannah Taylor also knocked in two runs for the Spartans.

Yoder hit a two-run triple for the Crimson Tide in the first inning. Holobetz hit a fourth-inning sacrifice fly that broke a 2-2 deadlock, after which Pottsville scored five runs in the sixth and seventh. Nick Chivinski had two hits for Pottsville.

Nate Wickersham, who took the loss on the mound, hit an RBI single for Tamaqua.

Hayden Paukstis allowed three hits over 6.2 innings and Brett Chikotas hit a two-out, two-run single in the sixth that enabled Minersville to defeat Division III champion Panther Valley in a Division II-III crossover game.

While Paukstis had eight strikeouts in the game, Panther Valley loaded the bases in the final inning before Jason Cullen relieved Paukstis and got a game-ending strikeout.

Minersville had taken a 1-0 lead on a two-out error in the fourth before another error and a single preceded Chikotas' two-run hit in the sixth.
