Local roundup: Old Lyme girls' tennis remains flawless in win over Westbrook

Apr. 18—OLD LYME — Abigail Sicuranza, Callie Bass, Sam Tan and Livie Bass each won in straight sets as the Old Lyme High School girls' tennis team swept Westbrook 7-0 in a Shoreline Conference match Saturday.

The Wildcats, who are 4-0 with four 7-0 victories, also received wins from the doubles teams of Lauren Wallace and Alexis Fenton, Fiona Hufford and Izzy Reynolds and Sophia Ortoleva and Elaina Morosky.

Old Lyme next plays at home Monday against Portland.

H.S. baseball

— Walker Baillargeon had three hits and two RBI as St. Bernard beat Wheeler, 9-3, in an ECC Division II game. Kolby Quinn had two hits, two RBI and two runs for the Saints (2-1, 2-1) and Guiseppie Satti tripled with two runs and two RBI. Starter Ethan Chavez also allowed four hits and struck out seven over four innings. The Lions are 0-2, 0-2.

— Colbe Andrews went 2-for-3, including a double, with two runs and an RBI as Old Lyme won its first game of the season, 4-3 over Westbrook in a Shoreline Conference game. Jimmy Creagan went 3-for-3 and scored for Old Lyme (1-3, 1-3) and Tait Sawden pitched a five-hitter with one earned run and nine strikeouts.

— Bo Yaworski pitched a one-hitter with 18 strikeouts to lead Killingly past Lyman Memorial 8-0 in an ECC Division II game. Yaworski also had two hits, including a triple, with two RBI for Killingly (3-0, 2-0) and Cole Lavigne and Chris Jax each had two hits. Josh Person singled for Lyman (1-2, 1-2).

H.S. girls' lacrosse

— Lily Cody had four goals and three assists in Old Saybrook's 13-8 win over Old Lyme in the Shoreline Conference. Emily Mesham had three goals and two assists, Caroline Crolius scored three times and Hayden Saunders had 11 saves for Old Lyme (0-2, 0-2).

H.S. boys' lacrosse

— Williams School opened its season with a 10-7 win over Rocky Hill School on Friday. Cody Delaurentis had two goals and three assists, Robbie Darling scored three goals and had two assists and Sam Kaplan had two assists for the Blues. Sterling Frost and JD Delaurentis had eight controlled groundballs each, Jack Yost and Colby Potts combined for 12 saves and Jackson DeFelice, Max Sarwar, Ben Xenelis, Frost and JD DeLaurentis each scored once for Williams.

College baseball

— Montville's Dougie DelaCruz had six hits, five runs and six RBI as Mitchell swept Lesley 19-0 and 23-2 in a NECC doubleheader. DelaCruz went 2-for-3, including a double, with two runs and two RBI in the first game for the Mariners (10-5, 10-5) while Jakari Pellegrini went 3-for-4, including a double, with two runs and two RBI. Also, Hunter Yaworski went 3-for-4, including two doubles, with three RBI and a run, Montville's Jeremy Sagun singled and scored four times, and Old Lyme's Eddie Kaftan allowed one hit over five innings with seven strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.

DelaCruz went 4-for-5, including two doubles, with four RBI and three runs in the second game while East Lyme's Owen Robbins had a grand slam with five RBI and scored. Also, Anthony Stigler went 3-for-3, including a double, with three runs and an RBI, New London's Lelo Martinez had a single, two runs and two RBI and Pellegrini doubled with two runs and two RBI.

Men's tennis

— Coast Guard swept Wheaton 9-0 and clinched a berth in the NEWMAC championship match on May 8. Banks Evans, Myles Decoste, Charles Norman, Sean Dreher, Kyle Fager and Logan De Los Santos won at singles for the Bears (3-2, 3-0). The doubles teams of Fager and Norman, Evans and Decoste and Chris Lansing and Lucas Arora also won.

— Trinity beat Conn College 6-3 in a NESCAC East Division match. Julian Tien and Zak Danz won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, for Conn (0-4, 0-2) and teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles.

Women's tennis

— Trinity beat Conn College 8-1 in a NESCAC East Division game. Allison Falvey and Brooke Scully won at No. 1 doubles for Conn (0-3, 0-2).

Women's outdoor track and field

— Four Coast Guard athletes won two events each to lead the Bears (115 points) past Southern Maine (51) and Rhode Island College (9).

Maeve Roach won the 800 (2:23.41) and 1,500 (4:47.73), Michelle Kwafo won both the 100 hurdles (15.59) and the 100 (12.61), Leilani Salang won the hammer (154-5) and discus (130-2) and Kelly Wade won the long jump (16-5.25) and triple jump (33-3). Kwafo and Wade also teamed with Elise Birkhaeuser and Hannah Jamison to win the 4x100 (50.59) for Coast Guard.

The Bears' other winners were Emma Hupp (3,000 steeplechase, 12:48.60), Karagan Bulger (400 hurdles, 1:06.56), Madison Garrigus (pole vault, 10-3.25), and the 4x400 relay team of East Lyme's Rasa Kirvelevicius, Rachel Burbeck, Amanda Kerr and Bulger (4:20.44).

Men's outdoor track and field

— Tanner Johannsen won the long jump (20-7.25) and triple jump (37-10.75) and placed second in the high jump (6-4) as Coast Guard scored 80 points to beat both Southern Maine (76) and Rhode Island College (18).

Andrew Cruver won the javelin (151-10) and discus (132-3) for Coast Guard while the team of Josiah Davis, David Loomis, Christopher Flynn and Brian Green won the 4x400 relay (3:31.15). Loomis also won the 400 meters (51.64) and Davis the 800 meters (1:55.04).

Other winners for Coast Guard were John Hanson (1,500, 4:24.88) and John Buchert (shot put, 38-1.5).

Men's rowing

— Coxswain Arthur Baltz helped the varsity 8 boat finish the 2,000 meter course in 7:06.1 Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond. Caleb Chiesa, Jack Walsh, Ben Meyer, Ben Chester, Hassan Rashid, Alex Saucedo, Jake Upton and Matt Timoney comprised the varsity boat. Coxswain Maggie Curtis-Hardy directed the second varsity 8 boat to a finish of 7:28.6. Jack Woodbury, Josh Cohan, Jimmy Morales, Joey Pimlott, Caleb Macenka, Suhkrit Narang, Brian Speers and Jack Aleska rounded out that boat.

Women's rowing

— Conn College lost two races to WPI. Emma Lanahan was the coxswain for Conn's varsity eight that finished the 2,000-meter course in 7:35.5. Clara Goldiner piloted the second varsity eight (7:56.2).

Women's sailing

— Sophomore skipper Ali Moffet and senior crew member Charlotte Williams helped Conn College place eighth of out of 16 boats for 64 points at the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association Championships.
