Local roundup: Mariners advance with an opening round win in NECC baseball tourney

May 8—NEW LONDON — Host Mitchell College opened the New England Collegiate Conference baseball tournament with a 20-0 win Friday over No. 4 Becker. No. 1 Mitchell (22-6) plays No. 2 New England College at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, with the winner advancing to Sunday's championship round.

Montville's Dougie DelaCruz was 5-for-6 with two doubles and five RBI, Anthony Laureano was 4-for-5 with two homers and four RBI and New London's Lelo Martinez had a two-run single for Mitchell. Jakari Pellegrini pitched six innings for the win, striking out 10.

H.S. baseball

— Tate Sawden pitched a four-hitter and scored three runs as Old Lyme beat Old Saybrook 17-2 in a five-inning Shoreline Conference game. Sawden struck out eight with no walks. Grady Lacourciere and Alex Roth drove in three runs each for Old Lyme (4-8, 4-8) and Jimmy Creagam, Riley Warecke and Sawden each had two hits and scored three runs

— Keyan Mayernik pitched a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts for Plainfield in Thursday's 10-2 win over Griswold in an ECC Division II game. Hayden LeClair scored three times for Plainfield. Evan Gilgenbach doubled for Griswold (4-6, 4-6).

H.S. softball

— Ledyard beat Montville 19-5 in an ECC Division I game in six innings. Sara Rivers (four runs scored), Aaliyah Amidon (homer) and Shailynn Williams (four RBI) had three hits each and Iyana Kirvan homered for Ledyard (9-1, 9-1). Brooke Taylor singled and tripled for Montville (5-4, 5-4).

— Stonington swept New London in an ECC Division I doubleheader, 22-1 and 27-11 in a pair of five-inning games. Maddy Stepski hit a three-run homer and finished with three hits and six RBI in the first game, while Tori LoPresto (home run, double), Phoebe Werling, Shea O'Connor, Payton Lowe and Maddie Mendez added two hits each for Stonington. Cassandra Roman tripled and scored and Caylee Parker had a hit for New London.

In the second game, Werling, Stepski, LoPresto and O'Connor had three hits each for Stonington (4-4, 4-4). Ella Cook hit a three-run home run for New London (0-14, 0-13), Gabriella Santiago was 4-for-4 and Finella Smith and Nalyce Dudley each had three hits.

— Winning pitcher Caitie Flynn had two hits, homered and drove in four runs as Norwich Tech beat Prince Tech 25-1 in a Connecticut Technical Conference game. Morgan Cook and Avery Sulman each homered and scored twice and Emily Grant and Madison Tweedy each had two hits and scored twice for Norwich Tech (6-2).

H.S. boys' track

— Glendon Dawson and Jordan Riberio won two events each as Norwich Free Academy beat Fitch 105-44 in an ECC Division I meet. Dawson won the 100 hurdles (17.9) and 300 hurdles (44.9) and Riberio won the shot put (51-2) and discus (123-4) for NFA (4-0, 3-0). Thomas Forde won the 800 (2:03.1) for Fitch (2-2, 1-2), which also got a win from the 4x100 relay team of Fernando Coreas, Nimyel Gamboa, Khyol Kershaw and Christian Cabusao.

— Griswold and Lyman Memorial finished in a 76-76 tie in an ECC Division III meet Thursday. Dylan Lucey of Lyman (2-2-1, 2-0-1) won the 110 hurdles (16.83), 300 hurdles (44.72) and high jump (6-2) and teammate Justin Thuotte won the long jump (19-4) and triple jump (39-9.5) while Max Hussey, Shane Franson and Eamon McMahon also won events.

Devon Chykow, Michael Strain and Tyler Farwell each won two events for Griswold (3-0-1, 2-0-1). Chykow won the 100 (11.58) and 200 (24.06), Strain won the 1,600 (4:41) and 800 (2:05) and Farwell won the discus (95-3) and javelin (105-8). Daniel Sims of Griswold won the shot put.

H.S. girls' track

— Kayla Park won two events as NFA beat Fitch 117-33 in an ECC Division I meet. Park won the 200 (27.1) and 1,600 (5:25.7) and Cat Hursey, Jasmyn Bransford, Alyssa Newson and Anna Ricketts won events for NFA (2-2, 2-1). Hannah Graham of Fitch won the shot put (28-1.5), discus (100-7) and javelin (74-3). Ashley Spreng and Kelsi Urson also won events for Fitch (0-3-1, 0-2-1).

H.S. boys' lacrosse

— Owen Macadam scored seven goals as Old Lyme beat Morgan 11-9 in a Shoreline Conference game. Nick Cox had three goals, Colin McCarthy scored and Dan Stack made 11 saves for Old Lyme (4-4, 4-1).

H.S. girls' lacrosse

— Caroline Crolius scored four goals as Old Lyme beat Valley Regional 8-4 in a Shoreline Conference game. Hayden Saunders made 15 saves, Emily Mesham scored twice, Ella Curtiss-Reardon had a goal and an assist, Sadie Bowman had two assists and Schuyler Greenho scored for Old Lyme (6-4, 4-3).

— Skylar Gustafsen had six goals and two assists as Bacon Academy beat NFA 18-2. Sarah Newton had three goals and two assists, Kaylea McCourt, Maddox Burton and Joely Stella had two goals and an assist each, Jessica Schuth scored twice and Katie Graham had a goal for Bacon (7-2). Jillian Brunelli and Alice Rourke scored for NFA (1-8).

H.S. boys' golf

— Medalist Nathan Sylvestre led the way as Grasso Tech beat Vinal Tech 219-220 in a CTC match. Sylvestre's 40 and the 46 shot by Nolan Blewitt led Grasso (3-1, 3-1) to the one-shot win.

— Bacon Academy handed Montville its first loss, winning 5-2. Lucas Baldinger (47), Connor Tuttle (49), Nate Harasimowitz and Noah Mikkelson won matches for Bacon (4-1). Morgun Whittaker of Montville (5-1) was the medalist with a 41 and Tyler Radford (45) also won for Montville.

— Stonington fell to Killingly 5-2. Justin Holland (46) and Ethan Torres (47) won their matches for Stonington (2-5). Logan Gagnon of Killingly was the medalist with a 44.

— Coginchaug's Colin Murphy shot a 41 to earn medalist honors and lead the Blue Devils to a 193-218 win over Old Lyme in a Shoreline Conference match at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield on Thursday. Pat Flanagan shot a 49 to lead the Wildcats (4-4, 4-4).

H.S. girls' golf

— NFA beat Bacon 252-260 in an ECC match on Thursday. Emma Hajdasz of Bacon (0-6, 0-6) was the medalist with a 52 and teammate Gianna Duckworth and Caitlin Daley of NFA (3-3, 3-3) both shot 61.
