Local roundup: Holdridge lifts CGA men to 19-12 lacrosse win over Clark

Apr. 11—WORCESTER, Mass. — Waterford's Caleb Holdridge had six goals and two assists as Coast Guard Academy outlasted Clark 19-12 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game on Saturday.

Will Iorio added three goals and four assists for the Bears (2-0, 2-0) while Matt Johnson scored four times, Gaige Kruger had two goals and two assists and goalie Dan Lucas made 16 saves.

In other games:

— Cory Lund had a goal and three assists as Williams beat Connecticut College 14-9 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Waterford's Logan Bowdish had two goals and two assists for Conn (2-1, 0-1) and Jared Rainville had a goal and three assists.

College women's lacrosse

— Katherine Pittman had four goals and an assist and Etta Davis added three goals and two assists as Coast Guard thumped Clark, 20-0, in the NEWMAC. Jenna Lesiewicz had four goals, Haley McCue had two goals and two assists, and Haley Howard had four assists for the Bears (2-0, 2-0). Maria del Rosario Chan also scored three times.

College baseball

— Austin Peterson pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts and a walk as UConn beat Georgetown, 6-0, in a seven-inning Big East game. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader as well as Sunday's game against the Hoyas were canceled out of COVID-19 concerns. Pat Winkel had two hits, including a double, and scored twice for the Huskies (16-12, 2-0) and Zach Bushling had two hits, including an RBI triple, and scored twice.

College softball

— Eastern Nazarene swept Mitchell College 12-1 and 10-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Eastern Nazarene is 11-1, 5-1. Madison Nicynsky drove in the only run of the day for the Mariners (2-7, 0-2) with a sacrifice fly to score Josette Madison.

College men's track & field

— Coast Guard's Tanner Johannsen won the long jump (20 feet, 10.5 inches) and the high jump (6-0) during a home tri-meet won by Division II New Haven with 101 points. The Bears were second (97) and Eastern Connecticut third (105).

Also winning events for the Bears were Josiah Davis in the 1,500 meters (4:03.28), Andrew Cruver (discus, 133-9) and the 4x400 relay of Jake Cordova, Logan Haynia, Jeff Meyer and David Loomis (3:26.77). Coast Guard had seconds from James Duren (800, 2:00.34), John Hanson (5,000, 16:39.55), John Buchert (hammer, 159-1) and Cruver (javelin, 148 feet-11).

College women's track & field

— Leilani Salang and Michelle Kwafo each won two events as Coast Guard won its home tri-meet with 155 points. ECSU was second (100) and New Haven third (76). Kwafo won the 100 dash (13.09) and 100 hurdles (16.33) while Salang won the discus (138-3) and hammer (156-3).

CGA's other individual winners were Hannah Jamison (400, 1:04.09), Taylor Winters (800, 2:23.58), Sidney Palinkas (1,500, 5:05.10), Mia Huncharek (5,000, 18:37.91), Madison Garrigus (pole vault, 10-9), the 4x100 relay of Kwafo, Kelly Wade, Elise Birkhaeuser and Hannah Jamison (50.32) and the 4x400 relay of Jamison, Rachel Bubeck, Karagan Bulger and Winters (4:19.80).

The Bears had a trio of athletes place second in two events — Sadie Olson in the shot put (36-9) and javelin (94-2), Kalea Salang in the discus (127-6) and hammer (135-9) and Kelly Wade in the long jump (17-1.5) and the triple jump (34-.25). Also finishing second for the Bears were Savannah Olyniec (5,000, 18:50.90), Katelynn Lane (100 hurdles, 17.17) and Rachel Bubeck (400 hurdles, 1:13.1).

College men's tennis

— Coast Guard won all nine matches for the second straight week during its 9-0 NEWMAC win over Clark. Seniors Kyle Fager and Chris Lansing each won their singles and doubles matches for the Bears (2-2, 2-0). Fager won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and team with Charles Norman to win 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Lansing won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles and teamed with Myles Decoste to win 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.

Banks Evans won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Decoste was a 7-5, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles, Norman won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Sam Dreher was a 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 winner at No. 4 singles. Evans and Dreher won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

College women's crew

— Conn College won both races against Assumption at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. It was the Camels' first competition since Oct. 26, 2019. Led by freshman coxswain Emma Lanahan, the varsity 8 crossed the line in 7:56.9 and won the 2,000-meter race by almost 33 seconds. Senior coxswain Kelley Spy Frumer guided the second varsity 8 boat to a time of 8:27.8 and a win over the Greyhounds by more than 48 seconds.

"I want to thank Assumption College for hosting us on Lake Quinsigamond today," said head coach Eva Kovach. "In September, one of our team goals was to race this spring and to be able to give the team the experience of competition again. It has been 23 months since we last raced a 2,000-meter race, and it was terrific to be able give the women that opportunity to do so today."

College cross country

— Mitchell's Emma Tschaikowsky won the women's race at the Mitchell Invite at Stenger Farm Park in Waterford. Tschaikowsky won the 5K race in 22 minutes, 57 seconds, to edge St. Joseph's Morgan Hall by 15 seconds. Taya Gollsneider was fifth for Mitchell in 26:54. St. Joseph's David Kavanaugh won the 8K men's race in 16:57. Mitchell's Evan Carney was second in 19:10 and teammate Tom Martens was fourth in 21:56.

H.S. girls' lacrosse

— Abigail Wing had eight goals in Griswold's 19-11 Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II win over New London. Emily Aviles and Madison Spinelli each added three goals for Griswold. Aislinn Strecker scored eight goals for New London and Emilia Skrabacz had three.

H.S. boys' lacrosse

— St. Joseph, the 2019 CIAC Class S champion, downed Old Lyme 23-1. Liam Celic scored and Nick Cox had the assist for Old Lyme.

— Guerin Favreau had six goals and four assists as Woodstock Academy defeated the Norwich Tech/Windham Tech co-op 13-1.

Girls' tennis

— Old Lyme swept past Old Saybrook 7-0 in a Shoreline Conference match, dropping just one game in singles and doubles combined. Abigail Sicuranza, Callie Bass and Samantha Tan earned singles wins and the winning doubles teams were Lauren Wallace and Alexis Fenton, Fiona Hufford and Izzadora Reynolds and Sophia Ortoleva and Elaina Morosky. Old Lyme won the No. 4 singles match by forfeit.
