Apr. 21—GRAY — Andrea Smith scored eight goals for Gray-New Gloucester/Poland in the girls lacrosse program's first varsity game, from which the 26ers came away with a 13-5 win over Fryeburg Academy on Tuesday.

Ellie Steele had two goals, three assists and gathered up 18 ground balls for Gray-New Gloucester/Poland (1-0), while Makenna Powell added two goals and Ashlehy Wilson also scored.

Hope Duffy scored three goals for the Raiders.

Griffyn Gomes, Matt Fournier and Nick Stanley each tallied a goal for the Patriots (1-0) in their season-opening win over the Raiders (0-2) in Gray.

Gray-New Gloucester goalie Sam Tibbetts made 12 saves.

The Knights broke away from the Blue Devils with a four-run fifth inning in both teams' season opener at Lewiston.

Poland (1-0) and Lewiston (0-1), who each had a three-run inning and a one-run inning during the first four frames, entered the fifth tied at 4-4. By the end of the top of the fifth, the Knights led 8-4. They added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.

Poland's Gretchyn Paradis pitched a complete game, striking out eight batters and allowing five hits. Atlantis Martin had three hits and drove in three runs, Sydney Lacombe had a double, a single and two RBIs and Kaylin O'Leary had three singles.

Gemma Landry and Emma Brown both hit solo home runs for Lewiston, and teammate Aubrey Peer had a double and two RBIs.

Brooke McKenney had a double, a single, two RBIs and scored a run, along with earning the win on the mound to lead the Bulldogs in Madison.

Landyn Landry added a double and scored three runs for Madison (2-0) while Lillian Levesque also doubled.
