Local roundup: Fitch rolls to 6-1 field hockey win over NFA

Sep. 22—NORWICH — Bridget O'Leary scored three goals as Fitch rolled to a 6-1 Eastern Connecticut Conference field hockey victory over Norwich Free Academy on Tuesday.

Sophie Ash added two goals for the Falcons (2-2, 2-1) while Alice Hu scored one.

NFA is 0-4, 0-2.

H.S. swimming

— Camille Caldrello won diving in Waterford's 103-77 loss to Haddam-Killingworth. Isabelle Bove-Dumin won the 100 backstroke for the Lancers (0-3).

H.S. volleyball

— Je'Licia Rivera had 25 points and six kills as New London defeated Norwich Tech 25-15, 25-15 and 25-19. Wennonah Amar had 13 assists and 10 digs and Yarielis Ortiz 13 digs for the Whalers (3-2). Autumn Lovett had seven assists and Caitlyn Flynn seven digs for Norwich Tech (3-2).

— Rita Sefransky had 39 assists and 14 digs as Fitch remained unbeaten with a 25-18, 22-25, 25-23, 25-22 win over Waterford. Annalyn Cahill had 17 kills for the Falcons (5-0) while Maddie Fancher and Katie Tuohy had 10 kills apiece. Waterford is 2-4.

Men's soccer

— Jake Creus scored the lone goal of the match as Connecticut College earned a 1-0 win over Endicott, Conn's third straight win. Manoli Despines made one save for the Camels (3-1).

— Coast Guard Academy, fresh off a 2-1 upset of No. 8 WPI on Saturday, earned the No. 1 regional ranking and No. 14 national ranking in the U.S. Soccer Coaches Top 25 NCAA Division III weekly poll. The Bears, off to a 6-0-1 start, were ranked as high as No. 14 in 2014, when they earned the program's first NCAA tournament bid since 1981. CGA visits Mitchell College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

— Johnson & Wales scored two goals in the final 8:46 to rally past Mitchell 2-1 on Monday night. Griswold's Mason Rubino scored his first goal of the season for the Mariners (0-5-1) and goalie Joey Rosa (Stonington) made four saves.

Women's soccer

— Four different players scored leading No. 14 Wesleyan to a 4-0 win over Coast Guard in a non-conference game.

— Angelina Munoz made her collegiate debut in goal and had six saves in Mitchell College's 3-0 loss to Mount Holyoke. The Mariners are 2-4-1.

College volleyball

— Amanda Dake hit .469 with a season-high 20 kills leading Coast Guard to a 25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16 win over Smith in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Maddie James hit .389 and finished with 10 kills and a match-high six blocks and Kaela France had a match-high 16 digs for Coast Guard ( 7-4, 1-1) while Noelle Tursky led the way with a match-high 42 assists.

— Trinity beat Mitchell 25-22, 25-19 and 25-9. Bree Rudolph had eight kills, Claire Binfield had 18 assists and Stephanie Costabile had 15 digs for Mitchell (3-5).

College field hockey

— Bridget Mason and Rowan Galanis each scored twice as Connecticut College balanked Smith, 5-0. Jackie Mountford earned the win for Conn (1-3) with five saves.

Summer baseball

— A pair of Norwich Sea Unicorns were honored by the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. Second baseman Kaelen Culpepper (Kansas State), who batted .301 in four games with six doubles, two home runs and 11 stolen bases, was named to the All-FCBL first team while Hunter Yaworski (Mitchell), who finished second in the league in hits (54) and third in total bases (79), made the second team as a utility pick.

College golf

— Mitchell finished second to host Eastern Connecticut at Monday's Warrior Invitational at The Windham Club. ECSU finished with a 299 total and the Mariners had a season-low 321 in the five-team field. Shamus McLean (Fitch) shot a 2-over par 74 for Mitchell, finishing third overall, while Michael McCarthy added an 81.
