LOCAL ROUNDUP: Cougars run past Holy Redeemer

May 8—Hazleton Area's boys' track and field team used 10 firsts and superior depth with eight seconds and seven thirds in Friday's 86-51 non-league win over Holy Redeemer

Matthew Cusatis brought home individual firsts in all four of his events, winning the 100, long jump, triple jump and high jump for the Cougars.

Hazleton Area also received individual firsts from Jhoan Robles (shot put), Russell Blew (discus), Samuell Guzman (javelin), Beck Hutchison (400) and both the 1600 and 3200 relay teams.

Girls Holy Redeemer 77 Hazleton Area 69

Lauren Festa posted three individual firsts, and Isabella Colyer had two individual firsts and another in the 400 relay to lead the Lady Cougars against Holy Redeemer.

Festa leaped to firsts in the long and triple jumps, and also won the high jumps. Colyer took firsts in the pole vault and 100-meter hurdles, and also anchored the winning 400 relay team of Karolyn Brito, Alexis Rossi and Jaya Franek.

Hazleton Area also received a first from Jillian Wolk (3200).

H.S. Girls' Lacrosse Hazleton Area 19 Pittston Area 5

Riley Hudock poured in nine goals, and the Lady Cougars won their third straight game by beating Pittston Area on Friday.

Kaci Kilker scored three goals, and Kyli Kilker added a goal and five assists for Hazleton Area. Meg Drennan and Lily Palfey each scored twice, while Amanda Merrick and Grace Gudich had single goals in the win.

Emily Sonntag, Taylor Kilker and Hudock also were credited with assists, and Hudock had the most draw control wins.

Abby Bellas made three saves in goal for the Lady Cougars, who travel to Lakeland on Saturday.

H.S. Boys' Volleyball Emmaus 3 Hazleton Area 1

Emmaus won the opening sets 25-16 and 25-12 before the Cougars clawed back to take the third, 25-20.

However, the Green Hornets closed out the non-conference match with a 25-11 clincher in the fourth.

For the Cougars, Cristian Posada had 12 kills, four service points, two aces and five digs.

Ryan Denicola contributed four service points, three kills and five digs, while Connor Wolfe pitched in four service points, four digs, two kills and seven assists.

Jr. High Baseball MMI Prep 14 Northwest 3

Nick Pantages got the pitching win and also singled twice to lead the Preppers.

Adam Frask tripled and singled, and Bryce Radwich added a base hit for MMI.

Lake-Lehman 17 MMI Prep 11

Mike Kranyak and Evan Pedri both singled twice, and Freddy Blaine drew a walk and scored a run for the Preppers.

Little League Valley East Phillies 13, Mets 3

Gavin Lagowy and Scott Mooney both pitched well, combining for 12 strikeouts in the Phillies' win.

Jacob Burkhardt roped a double, and Giano Corrado and Ramon Mendez both scored two runs for the winners.

Bella Boyle paced the Mets, pitching well with a pair of strikeouts, and scoring two runs.
