LOCAL ROUNDUP: Comets post tennis win over Cougars

Apr. 13—Crestwood took two of three singles matches and both doubles contests en route to a 4-1 Wyoming Valley Conference boys' tennis victory at Hazleton Area on Monday.

The Comets' Ben Ziegler starting things off with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kittrick Danzeisen at first singles.

Crestwood (5-1) also won at third singles, where Ryan Kostiuk upended Maxwell Hsiao 6-2, 6-0.

The Cougars (0-4) got their lone match point at No. 2 singles, when Cameron Zynel outlasted Kurt Grenzberg 6-4, 5-7, 10-5.

At first doubles, Crestwood's Noah Partington and Alex Covelens blanked Hazleton Area's Bryce Greco and Jacob Narrow (6-0, 6-0).

At No. 2 doubles, it was the Comets' Brayden Fenwick and Scott Lenio getting the forfeit win.

Ben Terry swept the sprints (100, 200) and took the triple jump, George Budihas won the two hurdle events, and the Golden Bears held off undermanned Weatherly.

Jacob Solonoski was a double winner for the Wreckers, taking the shot put and discus. He edged Mahanoy Area's Craig Derr by a half-inch to win the shot put, and then threw a 122-3 to take the discus.

The Wreckers swept the 800 and 1600, and first and second in the 3200 in a dominant performance in the distance events.

Josh Witner pitched a five-inning no-hitter, and also led the Prepper offense with a double and single as MMI took the opening game of the double-header. Nick Pantages also singled twice in the win.

MMI Prep 9 Wyoming Area 3

Tommy Horvat and Adam Frask combined on a no-hitter to complete the day's pitching gem for the Preppers.

Horvat also powered the offense with a double and single, while Bryce Radzwich poked a single.

MMI will host Lake-Lehman Saturday morning at 11.
