Local roundup: CGA to send five athletes to DIII Elite indoor meet

Mar. 9—NEW LONDON — Coast Guard Academy will send five athletes to the DIII Elite Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

Senior Maeve Roach is the top seed in the mile (5:00.54) and is seeded sixth in the 800-meter race (2:16.63). The mile will take place on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and the 800 on Saturday at 12:35 p.m.

Also competing on Friday for the Coast Guard women are senior Leilani Salang in the weight throw (seventh seed, 16.11 meters) and senior Mia Huncharek in the 5,000 (11th seed, 18:33.25).

The Bears will have two representatives in the men's meet with sophomore Tanner Johannsen competing Friday in the high jump (fourth seed, 1.98) and senior Josiah Davis competing Saturday in the 800 (eighth seed, 1:55.21).

Boys' basketball

— Jacob Ritchie hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime and Old Lyme took over from there, defeating Valley Regional 67-57 in a Shoreline Conference game. Colbe Andrews scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in overtime for the Wildcats (6-3), including going 10-for-10 from the line. He also had 12 rebounds while Ritchie added five steals and Maverick Swaney had 13 points.

Girls' basketball

— Old Lyme survived a test from rival Valley Regional, beating the Warriors 43-40 in the Shoreline Conference for its eighth straight win. Sam Gray scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Wildcats (8-1) while Emily DeRoehn added 11 points, 16 rebound and three steals, and Megan Loflin finished with five points, 14 rebounds and two steals.

College baseball

— Mitchell College's Anthony Stigler and Jakari Pellegrini were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference. Stigler, a junior outfielder, was named NECC Player of the Week while Pellegrini, a senior, was named NECC Pitcher of the Week.

Stigler hit .375 in two games with a double, three RBI and two runs scored, while Pellegrini pitched a three-hit shutout in a five-inning victory with five strikeouts for his 15th career victory.

College hockey

— UConn has been seeded No. 4 and will host No. 5 Providence on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Hockey East tournament. The Huskies (10-10-2) are 2-1 against the Friars this season, winning 2-0 and 5-3 at home while losing 4-0 at Providence in February.

This year's tournament will be a single-elimination event due to the pandemic with the higher-ranked team hosting each game. The semifinals will take placed on Wednesday, March 17 and the final will be Saturday, March 20, at 7 p.m. The semifinals and final will be televised live on NESN.

Boston College is the top seed with Boston University seeded second and UMass third.

H.S. academic honors

Field hockey: Caroline Real (East Lyme).

Soccer (boys): Cesar Amaya and Jacob Rose (Montville), Alex Ard (Waterford), Mike Milazzo (Old Lyme), Cooper Pazzaglia (East Lyme).

Soccer (girls): Vanessa Benjamin (Stonington), Emily DeRoehn (Old Lyme).

Swimming: Gloria Ng (NFA).

Volleyball: Sarah Ericson (NFA).
