Local record-setting paralympic athlete nominated for two ESPY Awards

A local Paralympian track athlete has announced he is now up for two ESPY Awards.

Last summer, Nick Mayhugh won three gold medals and one silver medal in Tokyo.

Now, Mayhugh said he is working to bring home some more hardware.

Mayhugh said he has been nominated for Best Olympian/Paralympian and Best Athlete with a Disability.

“I was speechless,” Mayhugh said. “I don’t know how to act. It’s such a genuine reaction. I’m very honored.”

Mayhugh, who has cerebral palsy, spoke with Channel 9 reporter Genevieve Curtis about why this recognition means so much.

“This is one of...the biggest award shows in sports across the entire world. For me to be involved and to be representing athletes with disabilities and the Paralympics as a whole is bigger than myself,” Mayhugh said.

Mayhugh said he is already training for Paris 2024. He said he is committed to breaking the world record he set in Toyko.

Channel 9 will have a special ESPY nomination show Sunday at noon.

The ESPYS will air live on July 20 at 5 p.m. NBA Finals MVP and Charlotte native Stephen Curry will be the host.
