President Joe Biden’s hopeless goal of using diplomacy to slow the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in the wake of his troop withdrawal has won the scorn of hawk Rep. Liz Cheney.
“When you look just at how the State Department, for example, is handling this, I mean, it's an embarrassment, and it has a huge impact on America’s standing around the world,” the lawmaker, who is influential in military and diplomatic circles, said.
In an interview with conservative Hugh Hewitt, she said, “The State Department is setting up, you know, hashtags and saying the Taliban has an interest in coming to the table. 'Let's negotiate.' The Taliban isn't going to do anything like that.”
Liberals and media outlets have cheered the Biden effort spelled out by White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki. She said, “The Taliban also has to make an assessment about what they want their role to be in the international community.”
But the warlords apparently aren’t listening to U.S. diplomats and have moved to take over more than half the country.
“For the American State Department, you know, a superpower, the leader of the world, to have our spokesman up there talking about hashtags, it just makes us a laughingstock,” added Cheney.
In withdrawing troops, Biden is acting on policies advocated by former President Donald Trump. Cheney opposed it then and now because she said it leaves Afghanistan open to terrorists and wastes the U.S. investment there over the past 20 years.
“It was wrong then, and it’s wrong now,” she told Hewitt, adding that the loss of Afghanistan is in Biden’s hands.
“Joe Biden, President Biden, made the decision to withdraw all of our forces, and what we're seeing now is the consequence of that. And it really is devastating,” she said.
