Iowa high school state track and field meet live updates, results: Jackson Heidesch awarded rerun in 800-meter race

Introducing the Register's 2022 All-Iowa boys track and field team

Happy Saturday, and welcome to the third and final day of the Iowa high school state track and field meet.

The past two days have flown past, with several new state title winners and records breaking left and right. Just Friday, eight new records were set — and that's even with several preliminary rounds.

Track and field fans are guaranteed a full day of excitement. The action kicks off with the girls and boys finals in the spring medley relay, and the 2022 meet will wrap up with finals in the 4x400-meter relays.

Here is a full list of the state titles that will be awarded on Saturday:

4:53 p.m — Jackson Heidesch finishes third in 800 after rerun

Dowling Catholic's Jackson Heidesch originally finished seventh in the Class 4A boys 800-meter run, but was awarded a rerun after interference was call. In his rerun, Heidesch ran a 1:54.62, good enough for third place behind Sioux City North's Gabe Nash and Yemane Kifle.

4:51 p.m. — Earlham wins third relay title of the weekend

Here are the top three finishers for all classes in the girls 4x400-meter relay:

3:36 p.m. — Wyatt Willand sweeps wheelchair track events

Northwood-Kensett senior Wyatt Willand went from last year's runner up to this season's state champion in the boys wheelchair 400-meter dash. He also took the state titles in the 100 and 200 events. Willand's sub-minute time in the 400 beat the previous all-time best mark by nearly five seconds.

Alayna Darter, a freshman at Dubuque Hempstead, won the girls state title in the wheelchair 400-meter dash with a time of 1:35.54.

3:28 p.m. — Addison Dorenkamp comes out on top in final girls distance event

Valley sophomore Addison Dorenkamp ran the Class 4A girls 1,500-meter race in 4:36.60 to clinch the state title. She held off Des Moines Roosevelt's Abi Hahn, who finished second and Sioux City East's Kaia Downs, who took third.

3:23 p.m. — Ainsley Erzen defends 1,500 title

Carlisle senior Ainsley Erzen defended her championship in the Class 3A girls 1,500-meter run, posting a new state record of 4:36.96 on her way to the 2022 state title. Ballard's Paityn Noe finished in second.

3:15 p.m. — Clare Kelly makes program history in 1,500

Van Meter's Clare Kelly ran a 4:39.13 in the Class 2A girls 1,500 and pulled ahead from her competitors in the final stretch for the state title. Kelly's win marked the first individual state title in Van Meter girls track and field history.

3:09 p.m. — Class 1A top three in 800 take top spots in 1,500

In the Class 1A girls 800-meter run, it was Jalyssa Blazek, Maddy Childs and Noelle Steines who finished first, second and third. That trio took the top spots again in the 1,500. Blazek took first again with a 2:15.83 in the 1,500. Steines took second in the longer race and Childs came in third.

3:03 p.m. — Jackson Heidesch gets redemption in the 1,600

Dowling Catholic's Jackson Heidesch overcame a fall in the 800 - which was ruled interference and earned him a rerun at the the end of the state meet - to win the Class 4A boys 1,600-meter run. He finished in 4:07.30, nearly seven seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.

3:00 p.m. — Aidan Ramsey wins 1,600 run

Dallas Center-Grimes senior Aidan Ramsey capped his high school career with a Class 3A state title in the boys 1,600-meter run. He won the 800 earlier on Saturday and came into the 2022 state meet the cross country state champion and Drake Relays champion. He finished in 4:15.24.

Saint Ansgar's Riley Witt finished first in the Class 1A race with a time of 4:21.08. Aaron Fynaardt from Des Moines Christian won the 1,600 in 2A in 4:20.63.

2:32 p.m. — Qai Hussey beats out teammate Jack Latham in 200

Here are the top three finishers in each class for the boys 200-meter dash:

Northwood-Kensett senior Wyatt Willand continued his dominance on the track, racing the 200-meter wheelchair dash in 30.27 seconds for his second state title of the day.

2:04 p.m. — Alayna Darter wins third state title of the weekend

Dubuque Hempstead freshman Alayna Darter won the girls 200-meter wheelchair race in 44.87 seconds.

1:43 p.m. — Kole Becker, Jack Latham soar past hurdle competition

Spirit Lake's Jack Latham continued his dominance in the hurdles - and at this year's state track meet - by finishing first in the 110-meter hurdles. His time of 13.81 set a new all-time record. Lisbon's Kole Becker won the Class 1A boys 110-meter hurdles in 14.45. Here are the top three finishers in each class:

1:15 p.m. — Record-setting day for boys 100-meter dash

First, Tripoli's Liam Carlson broke the state record in 1A with a 10.82 in the 100. Then, Marion's Alex Mota went from runner-up last year to champion this year in the Class 3A boys 100-meter dash. His time of 10.71 set a new state meet record. Dowling Catholic's Mikey McClain beat out two of the state's top sprinters to set a new state record in Class 4A.

Sioux City West senior Holly Duax defended her state title in the Class 4A 100-meter dash and moved into third all-time after running an 11.67. Here are the top three finishers in each class for the girls 100-meter:

12:52 p.m. — Wyatt Willand comes out on top

Northwood-Kensett senior Wyatt Willand won the 100-meter wheelchair state title after finishing in 17.12. He broke the state record of 17.81 that was set in 200

12:50 p.m — Alayna Darter wins second state title of the day

Dubuque Hempstead's Alayna Darter won the girls 100-meter wheelchair dash, just hours after winning the state title in the girls wheelchair shot-put. Valley's Rylie Lewis took second.

12:48 p.m. — Pleasant Valley wins 4A shuttle hurdle

Here are the top three finishers in the Class 4A boys shuttle hurdle:

  1. Pleasant Valley - 58.96

12:44 p.m. — Jackson Heidesch awarded rerun

Dowling Catholic's Jackson Heidesch has been awarded a rerun after ruled interference in the boys 800-meter run. He will run after the Class 4A boys 4x400. Heidesch finished with the seventh best time in the first race, despite falling down. He will also compete in the 1,600-meter run.

12:36 p.m. — Pella boys set state meet record in the shuttle hurdle

Here are the top three finishers for the Class 3A boys shuttle hurdle:

12:27 p.m. — Jack Latham anchors Spirit Lake to another hurdles state title

Here are the top three finishers in the Class 2A boys shuttle hurdle:

12:20 p.m. — Lenox wins 1A boys shuttle hurdle

12:11 p.m. — Dowling Catholic shocks Waukee Northwest in shuttle hurdle

Dowling Catholic's girls shuttle hurdle relay team withheld a dominant Waukee Northwest group and won the Class 4A state title. Olivia Kramer, Ruby Leman, Alex Gaskell and Esaba Okwaramoi's time of 1:00.44 was not only good enough for the 2022 title, but to also set a new state meet and all-time record in the event.

12:02 p.m. — Clear Creek Amana defends title in shuttle hurdle

Here are the top three finishers in the Class 3A girls shuttle hurdle:

Here are the top three finishers for the Class 2A girls shuttle hurdle:

11:37 a.m. — Sioux City North takes top two spots in 4A 800 run

Sioux City North junior Gabe Nash picked up a state title in the Class 4A 800-meter run with a 1:53.14 finish. His teammate, Yemane Kifle, came in second and Norwalk's Ben Hanson had the third best time.

11:31 a.m. — Aidan Ramsey comes out victorious in 800

Drake commit and Dallas Center-Grimes senior Aidan Ramsey finished first in the Class 3A 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.36. He passed Newton's Jackson Mace-Maynard, who finished second, in the last 100 meters for the win. South Tama City's Tommy Tyynismaa was third over the line.

11:26 a.m. — Des Moines Christian goes one-two in 2A 800

Des Moines Christian senior Carson Houg took home the Class 2A 800-meter run state title with a time of 1:56.75. Coming in second was his junior teammate, Aaron Fynaardt, who finished in 1:57.49. Spirit Lake's Ryder Sundall came in third.

11:14 a.m. — Third medal of the weekend for Earlham's Jayden Dickson

Senior Jayden Dickson won his third state title of the weekend in the Class 1A 800-meter run. He finished with a time of 1:55.64, passing Saint Ansgar's Riley Witt in the final 100 meters to pull off the win. Witt came in second and Dickson's Earlham teammate, Dominic Braet, finished third.

11:08 a.m. — Ani Wedemeyer picks up 4A 800 victory

Iowa City High freshman Ani Wedemeyer won the Class 4A 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.99. She was followed over the finish line by Ankeny's Alli Macke and Pleasant Valley's Grace Boleyn in second and third.

11:00 a.m. — Ainsley Erzen wins 3A 800

Carlisle senior Ainsley Erzen won the Class 3A 800-meter run in 2:10.07. Harlan's Kaia Bieker and Solon's Emma Bock came in second and third.

10:47 a.m. — Mid-Prairie's Mitzi Evans wins 2A 800

Senior Mitzi Evans picked up a Class 2A state title in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.56. Clare Kelly from Van Meter finished in second and Madison Brouwer from Sibley-Ocheyedan came in third.

10:46 a.m. — Jalyssa Blazek wins 1A 800-meter run

The first 800 state title of the morning went to Turkey Valley's Jalyssa Blazek, who ran a 2:15.83. Grand View Christian's Maddy Childs came in second and Noelle Steines from Calamus-Wheatland finished third.

10:36 a.m. — Tyrese Miller anchors Ankeny to another state title

Tyrese Miller, who already won the 400-meter state title and will go for the 100-meter title later today, anchored Ankeny to a first place finish in the Class 5A 800 sprint medley. Miller, Jack Belding, Tyler Sickerson and Tyson Miller finished in 1:31.46, good enough for fifth best all-time. Dowling Catholic and Cedar Falls finished in second and third.

10:25 a.m. — Dallas Center-Grimes wins 3A sprint medley

Dallas Center-Grimes held off some tight competition to claim the Class 3A 800 sprint medley state title. Kieran Shawhan, Zach Smid, Gavin Todd and Daniel Onwuramaka ran a 1:34.23 for the victory. Winterset came in second and Washington finished third.

10:23 a.m. — Koda Beland wins boys wheelchair shot-put title

A pair of Cedar Falls track and field teammates, senior Koda Beland and freshman Xavier Conlin, went head to head for the boys wheelchair shot-put title. It was Beland who came out on top, throwing 13-04.75 for the state title. Conlin threw a long of 8-01.25.

10:11 a.m. — Spirit Lake wins 2A sprint medley

The 400-meter champion Qai Hussey anchored Spirit Lake's 800 sprint medley squad to a Class 2A state title. Hussey, Jack Wajda, Jake Cornwall and Ethan Blackhaus ran a 1:33.22 to claim the title, while Pella Christian and Mediapolis finished in second and third.

10:04 a.m. — Alayna Darter wins girls wheelchair shot-put state title

Dubuque Hempstead freshman Alayna Darter won the girls wheelchair shot-put state title with a throw of ten feet. She improved in each of her three throws, winning the title on her third attempt.

9:59 a.m. — Lawton-Bronson wins first boys state title of the day

The Lawton-Bronson 800 spring relay team won the first boys state title awarded on Saturday. Leighton Olesen, Caleb Garnand, Louden Grimsley and Theo Moseman finished in 1:33.15 to pick up the victory. Iowa Valley and Gehlen Catholic came in second and third, respectively.

9:47 a.m. — Cedar Rapids Prairie defends sprint medley title

Gabby Cortez continued her reign on the track, adding another state title in the Class 4A 800 sprint medley. Cortez and teammates Asia Russell, Catie Reittinger and Sarah Jordan finished in 1:46.36 for the victory. Norwalk came in second and Cedar Rapids Kennedy finished third.

9:36 a.m. — Audrey Biermann anchors Western Dubuque to 800 sprint medley title

Iowa track recruit Audrey Biermann won Western Dubuque's first state title of the day and her second of the 2022 track meet with a victory in the Class 3A 800 sprint medley. Biermann, Ava Ramler, Sammy Recker and Brynn Walters ran a 1:45.58, which not only secured the state title but set a new record in the event

9:24 a.m. — KPWC three-peats in 800 sprint medley

There has been no room for error when it comes to the Class 2A 800 sprint medley, with KPWC looking to defend its back-to-back state titles and going for a third straight. MaKenna Bowman, McKenzie Goodwin, Aubree Bell and Erika Kuntz did just that on Saturday, running a 1:48.56 for the win. Denver and Panorama took the second and third spots.

9:12 a.m. — Nashua-Plainfield secures first state title of the day

The Nashua-Plainfield girls 800 sprint medley team won the Class 1A state title with a time of 1:51.44. The girls program entered the weekend without a single state title but will leave the 2022 Iowa high school track and field state meet with three titles. Mount Ayr and Audubon finished second and third in the first event of the day.
