LUBBOCK − For the third straight year, Texas Tech is the first opponent on the Texas Longhorns' Big 12 schedule.

The 22nd-ranked team in the Associated Press' poll this week, UT went 2-1 in non-conference play. Texas fumble turns into Tech win

Bijan Robinson fumbled on Texas' first drive of overtime, the ball knocked loose by a helmet to the ball.

Tech recovered, and then won it on Trey Wolff's 20-yard kick.

This snapped Texas' four-game winning streak over the Red Raiders, and it was Tech's first win in Lubbock since the 2008 Michael Crabtree game.

Texas falls to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big 12. The Horns host West Virginia next Saturday.

On to overtime

Texas Tech's Trey Wolff thought his 45-yard field goal with 21 seconds left was good enough to give the Red Raiders a 34-31 win, but Texas just went all Alabama and drove it with no timeouts to tie the game 34-34 on Bert Auburn's 48-yard kick as time expired.

How the Longhorns got there: Starting at their 25 after the touchback, Hudson Card found Xavier Worthy for 10 yards, and then Iowa State transfer Tarik Milton made a brilliant sideline catch for 28 yards to Tech's 37. And then Card found Sanders for eight yards to Tech's 29.

That set up Auburn's kick.

On Tech's drive, there were two critical plays by the Red Raiders. They made a gutsy fourth-and-3 with just a little more than two minutes left when Donovan Smith danced around the pocket and found Miles Pryce for the first down. It was Tech's sixth fourth-down conversion of the day.

Texas' Jerrin Thompson was flagged for a critical defensive holding penalty with two minutes left, moving the ball to Texas' 30-yard line and the first down in a 31-31 game.

Texas gives it back to Tech (4th, 5:33)

On third-and-3 from the Texas 42, Hudson Card rolled right and hit Jordan Whittington on the sideline, but Whittington was out of bounds. The Longhorns punted it away with 5:33 left, the game still tied 31-31.

The Red Raiders will start their drive at their own 17.

Texas 31, Texas Tech 31 (4th, 7:54)

After trailing by as many as 14 points in the second half, Texas Tech had rallied to tie Texas. Donovan Smith's 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Baylor Cupp has made this a 31-31 game.

Texas Tech had kept the five-play scoring drive alive when Smith escaped a collapsing pocket and scrambled five yards on a 4th-and-4 at the Texas 24. Texas Tech is now 5-for-7 on fourth down. The Red Raiders have converted a fourth down on four of their scoring drives.

The last three times that Texas and Texas Tech have played in Lubbock, the game has come down to a big play that was recorded in either the final minute or regulation or overtime. Texas has won six straight games as the visitor in this series.

With Texas Tech knocking on the door of a tie game, Texas finally came up with a big stop on fourth down. The Red Raiders called for a running play on a 4th-and-goal from the Texas 2. Texas Tech quarterback Donovan Smith was stuffed by a herd of Longhorns led by defensive lineman Vernon Broughton and defensive back Anthony Cook.

Texas 31, Texas Tech 17 (3rd, 4:27)

Texas has taken a 14-point lead at Jones AT&T Stadium after a 40-yard touchdown run by Bijan Robinson. That was the second touchdown of Robinson's day. The junior running back has scored multiple touchdowns in three of UT's four games this season.

The 8-play scoring drive features two instances in which UT quarterback Hudson Card made a nice play while facing pressure in the pocket. On a 3rd-and-9 at the Texas 26, Card stepped up and completed a 14-yard pass to Casey Cain. With Texas later facing a 3rd-and-10 at its 40-yard line, Card produced a 22-yard scramble.

Texas Tech's 37-yard field goal has cut into UT's lead. For the second time today, a Texas Tech scoring drive was kept alive by a fourth-down conversion. This time, the Red Raiders completed a 7-yard pass on a 4th-and-4 near midfield.

Senior defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat was kept busy inside of the 10-yard line as Texas attempted to keep Texas Tech out of the end zone. On first down, Sweat was credited with a tackle on a short Texas Tech run. He then batted down a second-down pass by Red Raider quarterback Donovan Smith.

Texas 24, Texas Tech 14 (3rd, 12:48)

The first three minutes of the second half have featured two fourth-down attempts. Neither Texas or Texas Tech were successful.

After opening the third quarter with the football, Texas Tech kept its offense on the field for a 4th-and-5 on its own 40-yard line. Texas Tech quarterback Donovan Smith fired an incomplete pass on the fourth-down attempt.

Texas was unable to make the Red Raiders pay for that decision. The Longhorns drove to the Texas Tech 32, but decided against having Bert Auburn try a 49-yard field goal on a 4th-and-2. Texas ran out its Wildcat offense but Roschon Johnson was stopped at the line of scrimmage.

Over its first three games this season, Texas was 4-for-4 on its fourth-down attempts. Texas Tech was 3-for-7.

The Horns are up 24-14 despite the fact that running back Bijan Robinson has only seven touches so far. Still, those seven touches have produced 66 total yards and a touchdown.

Texas Tech will receive the football to start the second half. Suspended for the first half because of a targeting penalty in last week's game against UTSA, Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown will be eligible to play after halftime.

With Texas using its Wildcat formation, UT running back Roschon Johnson kept the football after receiving the snap and picked up a 2-yard gain.

Robinson scored six plays after the first down was gained.

The first touchdown of Xavier Worthy's sophomore season has pulled Texas back in front of Texas Tech. After a scramble by quarterback Hudson Card, a wide-open Worthy hauled in a 39-yard touchdown pass.

Last year, Worthy caught 12 touchdown passes. That is a freshman-class record for the Longhorns.

The touchdown pass provided a bit of redemption for Card, who was intercepted by Texas Tech safety Reggie Pearson while throwing a deep pass on the previous drive. That was UT's first turnover since the first drive of its first game of the season.

Texas has touched the football twice today, and both of its possessions have resulted in points. A 40-yard field goal by Bert Auburn has helped UT regain the lead in Lubbock.

Texas had a first down at the Texas Tech 17 on this possession. A third-down sack of Hudson Card, however, thwarted the threat of a touchdown.

Texas 7, Texas Tech 7 (1st, 5:41)

Texas Tech rolled the dice and came up with a touchdown on its opening drive. On a 4th-and-goal from the Texas 4, the Red Raiders kept their offense on the field and quarterback Donovan Smith plowed his way into the end zone on a designed run.

Texas Tech also converted a 4th-and-7 play on the 18-play possession.

Texas Tech avoided an abrupt end to its trip into the UT red zone. On a second down at the Texas 7, Texas Tech gave the football to Myles Price. The Red Raider receiver cut to the end zone but fumbled after he was tackled. Texas Tech was able to corral the loose football and keep the drive alive.

Steve Sarkisian: Hudson Card to make second straight start for Longhorns

According to the Longhorn Network, Steve Sarkisian has anointed Hudson Card as UT's starting quarterback for today's tussle with Texas Tech. Redshirt freshman Quinn Ewers, who injured his clavicle two weeks ago in a 20-19 loss to No. 1 Alabama, did travel to Lubbock.

A third-year quarterback, Card also started in Ewers' place in last week's 41-20 win over UTSA. Card completed 15 of his 23 passes. In addition to his 161 passing yards, Card also ran for 35 yards.

This will be the fourth start of Card's collegiate career. He has never before started against a Big 12 opponent. During the 2021 season, Card threw 44 passes in conference play.
