Live Updates: Light accumulations of snow expected in the Fayetteville area

Residents in the Fayetteville area were waking up Saturday morning to the possibility of the second straight weekend of winter weather.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for much of North Carolina, including Cumberland County. As much as three inches of snow had been expected for some areas in the central part of the state.

Fayetteville and the surrounding area saw one of the heaviest snowfalls in years last weekend, but much lighter accumulations are expected today.

The winter weather advisory is scheduled to end at 9 a.m. on Saturday, but windy conditions and temperatures colder than the last several days are expected as the day goes on. The National Weather Service is forecasting a high of 37 with winds of 11 to 18 mph and gusts of up to 30 mph.

8 a.m.: Slippery road conditions possible

Light snow covered the grass in some areas of Fayetteville.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. for Cumberland County and the surrounding area. The National Weather Service said total snow accumulation from a coating to about an inch is expected but some higher amounts from one to two inches are possible.

Slippery road conditions are possible. Drivers are asked to slow down and use caution.

The state Department of Transportation continued to report clear roads in Cumberland County, but said some icy spots are possible in nearby Harnett County.

6:50 a.m.: Airport reports snow changing to fog and mist

The Fayetteville Regional Airport was reporting light snow at 6:05 a.m., but the weather had changed to fog and mist there about 45 minutes later.

The state Department of Transportation was reporting clear roads in Cumberland County about 6:45 a.m., but some icy spots were reported on roads farther north and west.

The National Weather Service reported at 6 a.m. that radar showed snow ending in the Triad region of North Carolina but snow was possible for the next several hours in the Sandhills.
