Iowa high school state track and field meet results, recap of Thursday's events

Welcome to Day 1 of the Iowa high school state track meet.

Over the next three days, the best of the best in-state track and field athletes will compete to take home state titles in several events. From the 100-meter dash and 4x800 relay to discus and shuttle hurdle relay, there’s a bit of everything spread out through Saturday.

Saying there is something for everyone isn’t an understatement.

Only have a dozen seconds to spare? The sprint events – like some of the ones Ankeny’s Tyrese Miller competes in – are for you.

Then there are athletes like Waukee Northwest’s Mackenzie Carney and Southeast Polk’s Abu Sama, who dominate the competition in their respective events.

And that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface.

Three state meet records fall on first day of Iowa state track meet

It was a record-breaking day at Drake Stadium as three athletes in three different classes broke the state meet record in three different classes.

First was Bishop Garrigan’s Audi Crooks. While she’s committed to Iowa State for basketball, it was the junior’s time to shine on the field. She threw 45-1 on her fifth attempt in the shot put, setting a new Class 1A girls shot put record. The previous record was 42-1.25.

Then Walker Whalen decided he wasn’t done with an already successful senior season. He set a new state record with a throw of 204-9 in the Class 4A discus, more than enough to win him the state title too. That 200-plus toss may have come on one of his final attempts, but he actually broke the record several times before his longest throw.

Wrapping out the day was Audrey Biermann, who ran a 54.56 in the Class 3A girls 400-meter dash to take home the state title. Her time is the fourth best all-time in that event, and broke the old record of 54.73 that was held since 2016.

7:32 p.m. — Track finals finished for Thursday

All the finals for the first day of the Iowa high school state track and field meet are complete, and Class 3A boys closed it out in style with the 400-meter dash.

Washington's Elijah Morris defended his title and won first with a 48.96. Finishing behind him were Pella senior Karl Miller and Fairfield senior River Patterson.

7:25 p.m. — Class 2A boys 400-meter dash record stays intact...barely

Spirit Lake senior Qai Hussey won the 2A 400-meter dash in 47.83, just shy of the state meet record of 47.43 that's been held since 2000. Pella Christian senior Levi Schelhaas came in second and Cascade senior Cole Miller finishe

7:15 p.m. — Audrey Biermann moves into fifth all-time in 3A 400

West Dubuque's Audrey Biermann put her name in the Iowa record books by winning the Class 3A 400-meter dash state title. Biermann ran a 56.36 - a new state meet record and the fifth best finish all-time in that Class 3A event - for the win. She held off Carlisle's Ainsley Erzen, who took second, and Solon's Emma Bock, who came in third.

7:07 p.m. — Mitzi Evans wins Mid-Prairie girls first 400 title

Mid-Prairie senior Mitzi Evans capped her high school career in the 400-meter dash by winning the Class 2A state title on Thursday. Her time of 56.36 was the best out of three sections, with Evans outlasting a push by KPWC's Erika Kuntz and Clear Lake's Reese Brownlee in the final stretch.

10:32 a.m. — Audi Crooks sets how many state records?

So, Bishop Garrigan's Audi Crooks, who committed to Iowa State earlier this year, set the record in the girls 1A state title in the shot put. Her furthest throw went 45-01, a new best in her class. But apparently that wasn't enough, because every single one of Crooks' six attempts broke the state record held since 2011.

10:27 a.m. — Saint Ansgar wins first 3,200 title since 1970

It's been a long time coming for any Saint Ansgar distance runner to win the Class 1A state title in the boys 3,200-meter run.

The drought ended Thursday, though, when senior Riley Witt won first by a landslide. He ran a 9:38.96 for Saint Ansgar's first state title in 52 years. New London's Alexander Julian and Earlham's Dominic Braet came in second and third, respectively.

10:15 a.m. — Valley, Roosevelt in top three for girls 3,000

Addison Dorenkamp, Abi Hahn, Kamryn Ensley.

It's a familiar finishing order in the Class 4A girls 3,000-meter run. In fact, excluding Ballard's Paityn Noe (who doesn't compete in 4A), Dorenkamp, Hahn and Ensley finished in that order at the 2022 Drake Relays.

Valley sophomore Dorenkamp ran a 9.55.89 to take the state title and set a new 4A best this season. Roosevelt junior Hahn came in second after passing Dorenkamp's teammate, Ensley, in the final laps.

10:00 a.m. — Calamus-Wheatland freshman wins first title of 2022 state meet

Freshman Noelle Steines outlasted close competition in the home stretch to win the Class 1A girls 3,000-meter run. She finished with a time of 10:21.01 to claim the first state title of the Iowa high school meet.

But this isn't the first state title for the freshman runner. In the fall, she wont the state title in girls cross country.

Hudson senior Addison Grady took second place and Grand View Christian's Maddy Childs came in third.

9:45 a.m. — Harris, Carney dominate in 4A shuttle hurdle

Waukee Northwest's Mackenzie Carney and Natalie Harris have put on a show in almost every major competition this season and the opening day of the state meet was no different. The Wolves took first in the 4A girls 4x100 shuttle hurdle with a time of 1:02.31. Here is the field in order of times:

  • Waukee Northwest

9:24 a.m. — Finals field set for Class 1A girls 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay
