WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON

Freya Manfred's keynote address at the Oct. 2 Sinclair Lewis Festival in Sauk Centre will include readings from her published poetry, which evokes aspects of family, friendship, and the natural world, and excerpts from her father Fred Manfred's 1945 novel, "Boy Almighty," reissued in paperback this month (Bison Books, $14), with an introduction by Freya. She calls "Boy Almighty" her dad's "most autobiographical but also his most lyrical." Fred Manfred, who died in 1994, was the author of 26 novels and short stories, including the five-volume The Buckskin Man Tales, one of which is his popular "Lord Grizzly." Manfred was a friend of author Sinclair Lewis and gave the eulogy at Lewis' funeral in Sauk Centre.

That handyman Spike Carlson, who knows his way around a workshop, is welcoming a paperback edition of his popular book "A Walk Around the Block" (HarperCollins, $16.99), with a subtitle that says it all: "Stoplight Secrets, Mischievous Squirrels, Manhole Mysteries (And Other Stuff You See Every Day & Know Nothing About"). The TODAY show critic said this book "... may just change how you look at the world around you."
