Please list highlights of your civic involvement: Dog foster for Saving Grace, volunteer for Equalty NC, Democracy NC and Johnston County

What are the three issues that you see as most important to your district and what will you do to address them?

Voting rights/fair districts — these must be fixed legislatively or nothing will matter without free and fair elections. Minimum wage must be adjusted so that people can live on their wage without subsidy, and affordable housing. A state/local partnership could be formed.

At a time when costs are rising, state government has a surplus. How should it be used?

Our surplus should be used to expand Medicaid and finally satisfy the Leandro ruling for an equitable education for all of our students plus fund competitive wages for teachers, staff, nurses, counselors and teaching assistants.

Will you vote for Medicaid expansion in North Carolina?

Yes.

What has the legislature gotten right, and what has it gotten wrong, about public education in North Carolina?

University system is a good one and really helps attract tech and good paying jobs. K-12 has been starved for funds and is stumbling. The voucher system has furthered weakened public education by diverting public money to often low-performing private schools with lesser standards.

Should North Carolina change its abortion laws? How?

The current state law banning abortion after 20 weeks should remain.

A woman’s reproductive choice should be made by the individual woman with her doctor and faith provider (if she chooses). This should not be a government decision. Rape and incest victims should not be required to continue that pregnancy. Children who have been molested should not be required to bear a child that resulted from such.

Should medical marijuana be legalized in North Carolina?

Yes.

What, if anything, should the legislature do to shape curriculum dealing with topics of race, sexuality and gender?

Children should be taught age-appropriate materials on race, sexuality and gender. To pretend that kids don’t know about these topics is foolish and dangerous. Age appropriate is the guiding principle as well as factual information.
