After season three of After Life dropped on Netflix last week, fans on social media can't stop showering the Ricky Gervais show in praise. It follows Tony, a widower who is trying to find some joy in his life following the death of his wife, Lisa. The big question that remains is; will there be a season four?
Sadly, the short answer is no; After Life season four isn't happening right now. Gervais has already said that the third season would be the show's last - and he was even hesitant to make that.
"I never really planned the third until it happened," he toldRadio Times. "I said to Netflix, ‘I’ll do a third if the second goes down a storm’, because you don’t want to do it for the sake of it. You want it to be demanded."
Despite the major success of After Life (the third season shot straight into Netflix's Top 10), Gervais insists that he's almost certain the show won't get another instalment. "I’ve really got to end it now,” he added. "It’s mad to end it now. It seems mad on every level, but I think it’s the right decision artistically. It’s a finite story, and that’s its strength.
"You never know what’s going to happen. But at the moment, I’m 99% sure this should be it. I don’t think I can top that ending. I think it’s the right decision [to leave it there]."
It's a shame, but we get it - and hopefully there will be another Ricky Gervais show to get our teeth into before too long.
