Lexington Town Council member resigns after accepting job in Florida

Lexington Town Council member Steve Baker announced Monday he was resigning because he has accepted a job in Florida.

Baker, who announced his resignation during the town council’s regular meeting, was elected in November 2016.

“Six years later, we’ve done a lot of good stuff,” Baker said. “I never imagined I would sit on the town council or be in any kind of elected position and so it’s been a real honor.”

On Tuesday, Lexington entrepreneur Gavin Smith announced his candidacy to replace Baker in a press release. A date for the special election has not been set.

“The Town of Lexington means everything to me,” Smith said. “It’s safe to say we’ve come a long way since we were children, but there’s still so much more we can do together. I’m humbled by the opportunity to run for Lexington Town Council, and am committed to putting in the work, talking with voters of our Town, and earning each and every resident’s vote.”
