Letters to the Editor: Thank a postal worker

The next time you come across

your postal worker, say thanks

I know that we all have lost patience with our post office. I know that we generally feel free to complain. I have a different outlook today.

Mr. Milhouse, the postman who generally delivers to my neighborhood is courteous, conscientious and a wonderful man. Every day he delivers to us is a good day because he smiles at everyone.

Recently, our mail was being delivered after 7 p.m. That is a really big thing. The postal workers are understaffed just like many other businesses. They are working to do their best for us.

So please, the next time you see a postman or postwoman, say thank you. It is an easy thing to do and saying thank you to people is something we really need right now.

'Banana Republicans': Humor has

become our country's grim reality

I came across an old clipping from the Statesman dated Aug. 2, 2003, which shows a Mike Peters (of Mother Goose and Grimm fame) four-panel editorial cartoon of an elephant smugly stating, “We overthrow presidential elections by impeachment,” “We overthrow congressional elections by redistricting,” “We overthrow gubernatorial elections by recall,” “… We’re Banana Republicans.”

This prescient bit of humor has become our grim reality. Hopefully we can change some minds and return this democracy to its roots.

With city's brush and bulk pickup

suspended, will rates go down?

Re: Jan. 27 Community news brief, "Brush, bulk pickup to be suspended."

I read about the city's decision to suspend its brush and bulk pickup services until further notice. Does this mean my rates will go down? Seems if they don't have enough resources, their payroll expense is lower and applicable utility rates should be adjusted downward. Does anyone think that will happen?
