Redistricting maps are perfect storm

The League of Woman Voters (LWV), the most bipartisan group I know, led the effort for anti-gerrymandering amendments to the Ohio Constitution and sued over the Republican-drawn and approved maps. Fortunately, the Ohio Supreme Court rejected the maps and ordered the seven-member Ohio Redistricting Commission (ORC) to draw new maps within 10 days. Republican Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor’s vote clearly was nonpartisan and temporarily saved the integrity of the Ohio court. Thank you for your service.

The five Republicans on the original ORC were Gov. Mike DeWine, Auditor Keith Faber, Secretary of State Frank LaRose, House Speaker Bob Cupp and Senate President Matt Huffman. Forget nonpartisan input from Cupp and Huffman, whose jobs include ensuring as many Republicans in the Ohio legislature as possible. The other three, who were elected by a statewide vote, basically stated that the maps may be unconstitutional but their approval helps move the issue to the courts. DeWine now said he will work with ORC members on revised maps. Late and weak, but a step in the right direction if that includes the two Democratic members. LaRose is studying the ruling. If he does not understand this clear anti-gerrymandering message, he is not capable of managing bipartisan elections. This is an opportunity for these three to do what they were elected to do. Represent the best interests of the people of Ohio.

If the U.S. Supreme Court has to get involved in this state matter, it may be years before we have Democratic elections. I doubt the states-rights-leaning court wants to touch this issue.

Clear a path for pedestrians

Why is it that three-quarters of the people who shovel the snow out of their driveways around here don't shovel their sidewalks?

Forgetfulness? Unaware of walkers in their neighborhoods? Or is it a sign of the times?
