LETTER: Show support for ban on cruel treatment of pigs

Our society is obsessed with dogs and cats, but all animals deserve compassion, including those used for food.

Unfortunately, today’s meat industry treats animals more like machine parts than the living, feeling creatures they are.

For example, mother pigs used by the pork industry and newborn calves raised for veal are routinely locked in solitary crates so small they can barely move an inch. This confinement causes enormous psychological and physical suffering.

Fortunately, we have a chance to ban this cruel practice in New Jersey. A bill in front of the legislature, A5236/S3401, would require that these animals simply have enough space to turn around. Let’s all respectfully call on Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Senate President Stephen Sweeney and ask them to let lawmakers vote on this important measure.
