Letter to the Editor: Let's always remember to honor 'greatest generation'

Enough!

We should focus on what has made this country great rather than a slash and destroy approach.

Recently, while on vacation, I read "The Greatest Generation." This book by Tom Brokaw should be required reading for all sixth-graders and again for all seniors in high school – assuming they can read. I do not say this lightly, having taught at the university level for 14 years.

The sacrifices that these men and women made are unfathomable in today’s society. Seventeen- and 18-year-old men went into battle knowing they faced almost certain death, and, yet, they did not sway from their personal obligation to defend our country.

Story after story brings tears to your eyes as you read the sacrifices of the greatest generation. The book covers all walks of life, as well as cross-sections of races and ethnicities. Truly, this generation was our greatest. I can only hope to emulate these heroes.

We have lost our way and have become an entitled society; we willingly accept government handouts, refuse to work when jobs are available, want immediate satisfaction rather than working hard to earn those privileges.

As a first-generation immigrant who did not speak the language upon entering public schools, I appreciate and commend the sacrifices that the greatest generation made so that I could enjoy the wonders of this country.

It is time to put aside our bickering, reach across the table and do what is best for all Americans. First, we need to focus on the first five years of life to give all Americans a fighting chance to succeed. Second, well-paying, skilled jobs go to waste because we refuse to get our fingernails dirty; this needs to change. Finally, we need to focus on our financial wellbeing and not demand immediate gratification. There is nothing wrong with a flip-phone; we all do not need an iPhone 13.

Let’s pay respect to our greatest generation, and honor them by continuing to make America the greatest country on the planet.
