Leonardo DiCaprio takes aim at Trump administration's climate change denial

Oscar award-winning actor and climate activist Leonardo DiCaprio made a surprise appearance at this weekend's Global Citizen Festival where he called out world leaders, like Donald Trump, for denying the science of climate change. Broadcast live on MSNBC, the annual New York City festival brought together musical performances, activists, and world leaders to advocate for change and eradicate global poverty. After pointing the Paris Climate Agreement was signed four years ago, DiCaprio said, "It's become clear that our political leaders have failed to live up to the promises that we celebrated that day." In 2017, President Trump announced he was pulling the United States out of the agreement meant control and reduce greenhouse emissions. "Our future is being gambled away, and our leaders, those whom we entrust to protect us and set the example, are either failing to stop these dangerous trends or, in some cases, denying the very science of this climate catastrophe" added DiCaprio. According to DiCaprio, the scientific community has spoken, and the facts are clear when it comes to climate change. "Unless you live in an alternate reality, there's no more time for denial. A carbon-neutral future is the only way we will inherit a planet capable of sustaining life on earth as we know it. This year's Global Citizen Festival comes on the heels of 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg's impassioned plea to the Climate Action Summit. DiCaprio praised Thunberg's fearless leadership in the Youth Climate Movement and fired back at individuals, like the President, that mocked the young activist's efforts. "Surprisingly, some have reacted to this movement with insulting tweets and negative talking points. Individuals that seem to care more about profit and their own self-interest than about your future," said the Titanic star. Dicaprio thanked Greta and the entire Youth Climate Movement for taking a stand and demonstrating real climate change leadership. "And while our leaders continue to deny the science, I can tell you one thing for certain. The youth is not," added DiCaprio.
