Winner/Colome fends off Platte-Geddes in Region 7B

WINNER — Platte-Geddes ran out of seventh-inning magic as Winner/Colome survived a late rally for a 6-5 win in Game 2 of the Region 7B tournament and clinched a spot in the Class B state Legion tournament.

The White Caps advanced to the finals after answering a four-run sixth inning by Gregory County with three runs in the top of the seventh for an 8-7 win on Friday. Needing to beat the Royals twice in the finals to win — Winner/Colome won 10-4 on Thursday — Grayson Hanson plated the go-ahead run with an RBI triple in the top of the seventh for a 4-2 win.

Nate Whalen drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the seventh and Grayson Hanson followed with another single for Platte-Geddes, but Kameron Meiners recorded back-to-back flyouts to left field to end the game.

After Platte-Geddes tied the game in the fifth, Adam Bohnet's RBI single in the top of the sixth gave the Royals the lead and Zach Bohnet scored on a wild pitch during the ensuing at-bat for the eventual game-winning run.

Meiners tossed a complete game for Winner/Colome (14-7), allowing three earned runs on nine hits and struck out three. He also drove in a run. Adam Bohnet had two hits, while Zach Bohnet had two RBIs.

Landon Schulte went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the White Caps, while Jackson Neuman drove in a run. Hanson finished the game 3-for-4. Hanson, Dawson Hoffman and Jackson Olsen combined to allow five earned runs on four hits and five walks, striking out four.

The win for the Royals came after Platte-Geddes twice staved off elimination in the double-elimination tournament, including topping Winner/Colome 4-2 in the first game of the finals.

Platte-Geddes finishes the season 10-6.
