Ledyard runs over Bacon Academy
Sep. 24—LEDYARD — It was shortly after James Green jetted 94 yards for yet another Ledyard touchdown and there were several minutes remaining in the game when head coach Michael Serricchio apologized to quarterback Jackson Poulton for not throwing more.
If there was one thing the Colonels didn't need to do Friday night, it was throw.
Ledyard devoured Bacon Academy on the ground with its triple option offense while its defense locked things down in a 41-3 rout in the Eastern Connecticut Conference's Division II.
"That's exactly what (Serricchio) was saying — 'The way these runs are going, it's very successful and we're just going to continue running," Poulton said.
The Colonels ran 45 times for 485 yards and six touchdowns.
Ledyard attempted one pass (a 10-yard gain from Poulton to Green).
"I mean, listen, when you run like we ran tonight, it's nice," Serricchio said, "but having that element of the pass, I think, is really going to take us to the next level offensively.
"Obviously we're a triple option team but, again, when you have to worry about the option and also the passing game, I think it's a really tough assignment for a defense. (We're) just trying to be a little more complete."
Green, a senior, ran 14 times for 255 yards and two second-half touchdowns.
Poulton, also a senior, had 17 carries for 166 yards and two scores. He ran for 155 yards and both touchdowns in the first half.
Poulton had experience at quarterback but moved to running back last season when Justin Outlow transferred to Ledyard. Outlow has since transferred to St. Bernard.
"I wasn't upset about it because I knew I could be used somewhere else," Poulton said about moving to running back last year, "but I'm very happy to be a quarterback this year."
Asked why he liked being back at quarterback, Poulton said, "If I make a mistake, I can blame myself. But if someone else makes a mistake, I can blame them but I don't like blaming people for their mistakes."
Colonels seniors Jacob Lenz (7 yards) and Liam Stahlbush (9) also ran for touchdowns. Classmate Jaden Tetlow also had two sacks.
Junior Jace King kicked a 38-yard field goal in the first quarter to account for Bacon's only points.
The Bobcats managed 130 yards on 36 offensive plays. Senior Jack Holmes completed 14 of 25 passes for 97 yards.
