Ledford's Hartzell, Kruse win tennis championship

May 18—CARY — Ledford's Chris Hartzell and Sam Kruse teamed to win the NCHSAA 2A boys tennis doubles championship Friday and Saturday at the Cary Tennis Park.

Hartzell/Kruse opened with wins against East Bladen's Jackson Bostic/Will Hester 6-0, 6-1 and Brevard's Blake Sharpe/Bradley Rising 6-4, 6-3 on Friday.

Then they beat Carrboro's Jonas Miyagawa/Connor Nicol 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals and Carrboro's Jonathan Baddour/Callan Baruch 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the championship Saturday.

Ledford's other qualifiers, Joe Lamb and Jake Queen, fell in the opening round against Carrboro's Miyagawa/Nicol 6-3, 6-3.

In the 1A, Bishop McGuinness' Bobby Peters and Luca Pestana lost in the quarterfinals against Raleigh Charter's Jeremiah Lee/Alex Hong, 6-4, 7-5.

In the 2A, Wheamtore's Jagur Williams fell in the first round against Salisbury's Will Koontz 6-4, 6-0.

TRACK NCISAA DIVISION I

CARY — Alexis Evans took eighth in the long jump to highlight Wesleyan Christian's performance in the NCISAA Division I track & field championship Saturday at Cary Academy.

Evans posted a jump of 15-05.75.

The Trojans — who were highlighted on the boys side by the 4x100 relay team of Torian Alford, Roberto DeCataldo, Nicolas Hackworth and Myles Kraska that took 11th — had six entries in five events.

NCISAA DIVISION II

LEWISVILLE — Isaiah Sanders won two events while Zoie Hembree won one to lead High Point Christian in the NCISAA Division II track and field championship Saturday at Forsyth Country Day.

Sanders won the 100 meters in 11.27 and the 200 meters in 25.56 to lead the HPCA boys, who totaled a team score of 54 to take sixth out of 15 teams. Hembree won the pole vault with a mark of 10-06.00 to key the HPCA girls, who posted a team score of 25 to take ninth out of 12 teams.

The 4x200 team of Myles Archie, Levi Curlee, Chris Day and Sanders finished third to highlight nine boys top-five finishers. Hembree also finished third in the long jump and the 4x100 team of Sophie Braetzkus, Hembree, Georgia Walls and Hailey Swaim for the girls team.

HPCA had a combined 21 entries in 19 events.

NCISAA DIVISION III

GASTONIA — Westchester Country Day's boys took fifth place as a team during the NCISAA Division III track and field championship Saturday at Gaston Christian.

Westchester totaled 70 points, finishing near the top of the 17-team field.

Caleb Bayne won the 800 meters in 2:10.74 and won the 1600 meters in 4:43.52, while Cruz Hesling won the 3200 meters in 10:13.67, and the 4x800 relay team of Hesling, Tyler Matthews, George Culp and Bayne won in 8:38.10.

Culp (third, 1600m), Mikey Schwartz (fifth, 1600m), Connor Apple (second, pole vault) and the 4x100 relay team of Carter Scavo, Adam Edsayed, Cleveland Armentrout and Ben Bublitz that finished third highlighted Westchester.

The 4x400 relay team of Heather Butner, Ella Timberland, Claire Neal and Sophia Singer took fifth to highlight the Westchester girls, who posted nine points to finish 14th out of 18 teams.

Westchester had a combined 24 entries in 16 events.

HPU SPORTS BASEBALL

HIGH POINT — Presbyterian defeated High Point University 13-11 and 10-6 in a Saturday doubleheader at Williard Stadium and completed a sweep of a three-game Big South series that pulled the curtain down on the Panthers' home schedule.

PC improved to 17-20, 16-15 in the Big South, HPU dropped to 14-28, 12-22 with three games left Thursday and Friday at Campbell.

The first game went 10 innings. The Blue Hose scored four in the extra frame and held on to win by limiting the Panthers to two.

HPU led 8-7 after scoring three in the sixth on an RBI single and two wild pitches.

Presbyterian never trailed in the second game.

Peyton Carr was the only Panther with multiple hits in both games as he picked up three in the first contest and two in the second, including a no-doubt homer to give him two in the series and a team-high seven on the year. Ryan Russell and Brady Pearre also had three knocks in the opening game, part of 16 hits for HPU. Russell drove in a team-high three runs in the first game and Pearre brought home two in each, getting both of his RBIs in the second game courtesy of a two-run homer to left. Blake Sutton picked up two hits in game one of the day and drove in a pair while Joe Johnson extended his hitting streak to a season-best nine straight games after getting a hit in both games and driving in two runs in the second game.

FAYETTEVILLE — Sook Hee Yang of Jamestown is tied for fifth after the first round of the North Carolina Women's Senior Amateur.

Yang shot 8-over-par 80 at Highland Country Club and trails leader Pat Brogden of Garner by seven strokes. Katherine DeVore of High Point shot 92 and is tied for 18th.
