LeBron James, others instantly recall Michael Jordan's first retirement during 'The Last Dance'
Episode 7 of “The Last Dance” kicked off with Michael Jordan’s final days of the 1993 season and his surprise retirement — something that brought out plenty of emotions from fans watching at home.
And it’s easy to understand why. Without a doubt, it was the biggest sports story of the year.
After seeing Jordan walk into the Chicago Bulls’ practice facility into a room completely packed with reporters and other media members in the episode, fans everywhere could seemingly remember exactly where they were that day.
That announcement, LeBron James shared on Twitter, made him cry. He was just 9 years old.
Definitely cried this day. 9 years of age. Just Couldn’t believe it

James wasn’t alone, either. Whether it was in a classroom, reading it in a newspaper or on their living room TV, fans were stunned. And finding a modern-day comparison to that move seemed nearly impossible.
I'll never forget when MJ retired that first time..

My teacher brought in one of those giant square TVs on the rolling cart into class so we could watch MJ's retirement live. And cry. Or maybe that was just me. #TheLastDance

I watched that Jordan retirement press conference during graphics class in high school. Shout out, Mr. Andrade.

Jordan retiring in 1993, just before the home internet and AOL dialup. Wish we could go back.

The most surprised I’ve ever been by anything in a newspaper was Jordan’s retirement. I was watching the Sox game, but on mute. I wondered why they kept showing MJ in the owner’s box. Turned off the TV before sportscenter. Next a.m., over the door and Bang! “Say it Ain’t So Mike”

Me, five years old, watching Michael Jordan retire: That's crazy

Jordan announcing his retirement that day was full heartbreak in Chicago. As a kid, you don’t understand why someone that iconic walks away. When Jordan retired, I literally looked at the tv like this... #TheLastDance pic.twitter.com/NeP8SnoQ8l

The only close equivalent would be if Messi/Ronaldo retired from soccer to play a different sport.
