Latest on road conditions, wrecks in Charlotte due to Ian rain and winds

A flurry of wrecks on Charlotte roads and interstates at the height of heavy rain Friday evening began clearing by 6:45 p.m.

Rain and wind from Hurricane Ian’s landfall caused downed power lines, fallen trees, and vehicle accidents. In a few hours time, according to Medic around 4 p.m., there had been 30 vehicle accidents due to the storm but none with serious injuries.

The National Weather Service placed Mecklenburg County under a flood watch until Saturday morning and said between a quarter and a half an inch of rain was expected. Officials urge people to stay off the road through Friday night and into Saturday.

Charlotte’s Fire Department responded to 39 storm related emergencies between late Thursday and 5 p.m. Friday, officials announced on Twitter. At least two families have been displaced but no injuries are reported.

Officials have reopened the lane that was closed on I-85 North at mile marker 23 near McAdenville after a wreck around 5:47 p.m.

A crash had closed most of I-77 southbound north N.C. Hwy. 150 in Mooresville, channel 9’s traffic team reported just before 5:40 p.m.

The CityLynx Gold Line has returned to full service after a fallen tree temporarily paused operations, the Charlotte Area Transit System reported.

The two left lanes are closed on I-85 south at mile marker 45 due to a vehicle crash just after 5 p.m., NCDOT reported. The lanes were expected to reopen close to 7 p.m.

Southbound I-77 was down to one lane after a crash near Tyvola Road, causing delays back to South Tryon Street, Woodlawn Road, and Billy Graham Parkway, according to channel 9’s traffic team just after 4 p.m.
