LaMoure/LM looking to go deeper in regional tournament

Dec. 4—As the other LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Class B teams are succeeding, the boys basketball team hopes that they can do the same this season.

The Loboes are coming off a season in which they went 16-8, winning seven of their last 10 games heading into the regional tournament. In the Region 3 tournament, the team matched up against the Linton/Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock Lions and fell 50-38. The team is trying to continue their rebuild after they went 22-5 in the 2018-19 season, they went 15-10 in the 19-20 season, and 16-8 in the 20-21 season.

Regardless of who, the Loboes open up against, head coach DarrenThielges and his team are not concentrating on everybody else but more looking to improve upon last year.

"I don't think we are really concerned with where everybody else is at. We just have to set a standard and set a base and a foundation to build off of. Our goal is not going to be to get to a certain point and determine if the season is a success or not," Thielges said. "We're just going to try to build and be the best team that we can possibly be. I think we have the potential to get a lot of wins with that."

The Loboes are one of the most experienced teams in Class B, having only one player graduate from last year's team. As a result, they have seven seniors on their roster this year. Despite that, Thielges is waiting to see who naturally steps up as a leader for his team.

"That is always an expectation, just being a senior puts you in a position to be a natural leader. The tough part coming up is going to be what happens when you face some adversity. I don't think you can appoint that position," Thielges said. "I think you just have to encourage guys and set them up to put themselves in a position to be a leader. They have to take it over themselves, they have to take ownership of the program."

Two of the underclassmen on the roster that Thielges expects to take steps forward this year are Tate Mart and Max Musland.

"I think Tate Mart is one that shows a lot of promise as a ball handler and a floor general as he learns the game more and gets the ball to the right spots and learns better decision making. I think he can have a breakout year," Thielges said. "I think Max Musland, he's going to be a sophomore, he worked his way into the starting lineup last year and he's a great shooter, he worked on his game a lot and we are looking to see if he can take it to the next level and add more aspects. Carter Bowman is another sophomore this year that saw a lot of minutes off the bench last year, he will have a more prominent role as well. Anthony Hansen, with confidence I think he can become a very assertive and confident player on the team as well."
