Laker girls take first OK Blue cross country meet

Sep. 23—Scores and more from Wednesday's local high school action:

Grand Haven

Boys tennis: A pair of doubles victories couldn't push the Buccaneers over the finish line against Jenison, who won 6-3. Grant Taylor was the lone singles winner, and three matches in the third set decided things.

Caden Buller and Jesse Andrzejewski won their match at 4-doubles in a tiebreak, but losses at 1-doubles and 4-singles kept the Wildcats ahead.

They'll host Grandville on Monday, Sept. 27.

Spring Lake

Cross country: In their first OK Blue meet of the season, Spring Lake's girls took first place and the boys were second in races at Hudsonville Unity Christian.

A pair of Lakers were the top individuals on the day — senior Ian Hill won the boys race by 15 seconds in 17 minutes, 8 seconds and junior Lily Parker's 20:36 won the girls race.

Parker was one of three girls in the top 10 for Spring Lake, as freshman Lexie Ruffing was third in 21:13 and sophomore Bea Reeser was eighth in 22:04. Anna Stempky (20th, 23:24) and Makaela Schmidt (23rd, 23:30) rounded out the scoring for the Lakers, who were three points ahead of second-place Allendale.

The boys were behind Holland Christian by 18 points, but well ahead of third-placed Fruitport. Seniors Sam Davidson and Carter Phillips finished 10th and 11th around the 18:40 mark, and junior Ethan Grevengoed was 14th in 18:57. Austin Barding's 24th-place finish in 19:31 was the final scorer for the Lakers.

Both teams compete on Saturday — the boys at Calvin College in Grand Rapids and the girls at Heritage Christian in Hudsonville.

Fruitport's boys were third thanks to top-15 finishes from Levi Glynn and Alex Facundo. The Trojan girls were fifth, as Valerie Pollock and Brooke Sweet were 12th and 13th.

The Lakers took care of business in their conference finale at home against Allendale, winning 8-0 before playing all 80 minutes. Porter Saunders was the catalyst, tallying a hat trick and causing an own goal. Conrad Bush, Hunter Malaski, Jack Mulder and Isaac Rudd added the other goals for Spring Lake, who will finish third in the conference standings.

They'll host North Muskegon on Saturday and travel to Forest Hills Eastern before the OK Blue conference tournament starts next month.
