Lake Region State College names new athletic director

Jan. 18—DEVILS LAKE — Lake Region State College has named a longtime coach as its new athletic director.

According to a release from the college, Jared Marshall, head coach of the men's basketball team, is now working as the new athletic director. Marshall was named to the position following the departure of Daniel Mertens, who left the college after a number of

allegations were raised by athletes and parents.

"I feel very fortunate and blessed to be named the new athletic director at Lake Region State College," Marshall said. "I am excited for the opportunity to lead an athletic department with a dedicated group of student athletes and coaches that compete in the wide variety of sports that (the college) has to offer."

Along with the athletic director role, Marshall will continue as the men's head basketball coach.

Marshall holds a history degree from the University of Northern Colorado and a master's degree in athletic administration and human performance from the University of Mary. He is a Colorado native.

According to the LRSC release, Marshall has coached nine All MonDak Conference players and eight All-Region XIII Players. Thirteen of his athletes received NJCAA Academic Student Athlete Awards. He has also had 39 players named to the MonDak Academic All-Conference Team, and the men's basketball team has been named an NJCAA All-Academic team three times. Athletes on the men's basketball teams finished with the fifth highest grade-point average nationally in 2017, 19th highest in 2018 and eighth highest in 2019.

Marshall's record as men's basketball coach is 112-86.

"Coach Marshall has been with LRSC for seven years, and he's committed to maintaining an athletics program centered on success for our student athletes on the court or field and in the classroom," said LRSC President Doug Darling.

Lake Region offers men's and women's basketball, volleyball, clay target shooting, baseball and softball.
