Lake effect snow band causing area crashes, with more snow expected Thursday afternoon

A lake effect snow band contributed to a multi-vehicle crash Thursday morning on Interstate 77 near I-80, with the National Weather Service issuing a hazardous weather warning for north central Ohio, including parts of Summit County.

Traffic service Waze reported stop and go traffic from the vehicle crash, which happened about 11:35 a.m. on I-77 South at Exit 145, Ohio 21/Brecksville Road. Ohio Department of Transportation cameras showed near whiteout conditions in the area. Traffic delays of up to 20 minutes were reported.

Emergency crews were reporting other vehicle crashes and sliding off roadways in the region. Hazardous road conditions could continue into the Thursday evening commute.

How much snow fell?: Some of Summit County sees 19 inches of snow; northern Ohio storm totals released

The National Weather Service said one to two inches of snow fell in the area this morning from the lake effect snow band. Frigid cold is expected to move in as well.

The weather service expected additional accumulations of one to three inches of snow Thursday and totals of as much as 5 inches through 4 a.m. Friday in northern Summit and higher elevations in other nearby counties.

A winter weather advisory was put in place until 4 a.m. Friday.

Thursday's snow comes after a foot and more of snow in places fell on the region on Monday, disrupting schools, businesses, government services and more.

The National Weather Service said frigid cold weather was expected overnight with lows in the single digits. Friday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 20 in Summit County, followed by temperatures plunging in the night with a low of around 1 degree.
