Laguna Seca’s going to get spiffed up. The Monterey County Board of Supervisors voted Dec. 8 to repave the track, replace the rickety wooden pedestrian bridge at start/finish, and even continue work towards a better hospitality suite at Turn 3. This is after all those nice new hospitality suites over the pit straight and a few other upgrades the track saw several years ago.

The repaving and the bridge will cost just under $10 million, while the Turn 3 hospitality had been previously under consideration by the Board and was included in the discussion leading up to the vote Wednesday.

“The track, we all know, is in its 14th season,” said John Narigi, President & General Manager at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca & Laguna Seca Recreational Area. “The lifespan should be about seven to 10 years. It's hot (in use) 95% of the days throughout the year. Track rental by itself is a steady revenue stream... The track is iconic worldwide and highly rated in the racing industry. (But) complaints from club events and professional series have become common.”

The original plan was to do the work in the 2022-2023 timeframe, but that timeframe may change, Narigi said.

More details to come soon.
