Lady Spartans dispose of Bandys

Dec. 8—SAWMILLS — Bandys' girls battled South Caldwell, briefly.

The Lady Spartans, though, roared to life and buried the visitors 40-27 on Wednesday night in non-conference prep basketball action.

"They had a good game plan," South coach Jeff Parham said. "They slowed it down, and they were thorough on their offense — run it. I thought at times, we were too fast on our offensive end and had to play a lot of defense.

"But I was proud of the defensive effort, what we did tonight. And offensively down the stretch at the end, we started doing a little bit better."

The Lady Spartans (4-2) held a 14-11 halftime advantage thanks to Kaylee Anderson's 3-pointer in the final minute.

Anderson tacked on eight more points in the third quarter, to propel her team ahead 28-19 after three periods. Anderson finished with 21 points, including four 3-pointers.

"It's amazing, when she is feeling it she shoots it," the coach said. "When she does, she's a good shooter."

Kennedy Setzer contributed a pair of buckets, the second off a steal. Anderson's final trey saw the Lady Spartans in control 36-23.

Bandys (2-3) was unable to trim the deficit under double digits. The Lady Trojans never led, but had managed to tie the affair late in the first half after trailing 6-3 heading in the second period.

Lillie Bumgarner had a tail on her all evening, scoring only six points. But the 6-foot-2 junior was good for nine rebounds and nine steals.

"She's active, and she plays a lot of minutes, too," Parham said. "I've been proud of her endurance, because last year she might have played 14 minutes a game. But this year, she's up there playing about 28-30 minutes a game.

"For her to do what she does, I'm just proud of Lillie. Defensively, she did some good stuff, stepped out and helped us out."

The Lady Spartans also got eight points, four boards and four steals from Kennedy Setzer. Kristin Barber totaled four points, three steals and a blocked shot.

Addison Edwards covered the floor with six steals. Anderson chipped in three boards and two steals, while Landrie Smith grabbed three rebounds.

South was 3 of 10 on free throws.

The Lady Trojans were 5 of 8 at the foul line and held a 25-23 edge on the glass. Bandys had no player score in double figures, with strapping post Brooklan Fisher banging her way to eight points.

"I was proud of the young ladies, again," Parham said. "Good group of young ladies. We'll take it, and get ready for the next one."
