L-S volleyball can't find win column at North Mahaska tournament

Sep. 24—NEW SHARON — Lynnville-Sully's volleyball team came up short of the win column in five tries at the North Mahaska tournament on Saturday.

The Hawks fell to South Iowa Cedar League rival Sigourney and Grinnell in three sets but were swept by Pleasantville twice and New London once.

Sigourney downed L-S 21-15, 13-21, 15-11 and Grinnell defeated the Hawks 21-6, 18-21, 15-10. Pleasantville swept L-S 21-13, 23-21 and 21-10, 21-14. New London defeated L-S 21-7, 21-6.

Against Sigourney (11-8), Elise Alberts had 10 assists, six digs and two aces, Lily Zylstra had nine digs and two kills and Alexy Conover added eight digs and four kills.

Paige James chipped in two kills, two digs and four aces, Abby Squires put down five kills, Aliya James had seven digs and Jordan Spooner tallied five digs. Makayla Tice dished out two assists and Aubree Arthur put down two kills.

The Hawks were 41-of-45 in serves with nine aces. Aliya James and Spooner were 7-of-7 in serves, while Paige James served 13-of-14 and Alberts was 6-of-6.

In the loss to Grinnell (14-6), Conover had five kills, four digs and two aces, Alberts dished out nine assists and had two digs and Zylstra tallied five kills and six digs.

Aliya James had seven digs and two kills, Arthur put down three kills and had two digs and Squires finished with two kills and two digs. Tice collected three digs.

The Hawks (4-15) were 34-of-36 in serves with Paige James serving 6-of-6, Conover connecting on 9-of-9 and Alberts hitting on 7-of-7.

In the loss to New London (12-7), Alberts had five assists and three digs, Zylstra chipped in seven digs and two kills and Aliya James finished with a team-best eight digs.

Squires finished with two kills and three digs, Conover had four digs and Tice tallied two digs.

In the first loss to Pleasantville (9-8), Paige James had two kills, two aces and five digs, Alberts tallied six assists and two digs and Zylstra finished with a team-best eight digs and put down two kills.

Aliya James had six digs, Conover tallied two kills and four digs, Arthur finished with two kills and Natalie Roberts had two digs.

The Hawks were 29-of-35 in serves with Spooner going 10-of-10.

In the other loss to the Trojans, Alberts had seven assists, Aliya James added five digs and Zylstra chipped in four digs and two kills.

Squires collected two kills and two blocks and Spooner finished with four digs.

The Hawks were 23-of-23 in serves with Paige James going 6-of-6 and Spooner finishing 5-of-5.
