HUDSON — L.L. Bean, the iconic Maine-based maker of outdoor clothing and recreation equipment, will open a new store at Highland Commons off Coolidge Street (Route 62) later this year, Director of Planning and Community Development Kristina Johnson confirmed.

L.L. Bean, which has been in business since 1912, has placed a sign outside the shopping center announcing its pending arrival, but further details remain scarce.

“We don’t know much more about it; the Planning Board approved the site plan and after that they don’t need to file anything else with the town,” Johnson said.

Jason Sulham, a spokesperson for L.L. Bean, confirmed a store would open in Hudson, but that other details, such as how many people will be hired, were still being determined.

“I can confirm that we will be opening a store at Highland Commons; however, the other details are still being determined and we will announce them at a later date,” Sulham stated.

L.L. Bean operates 56 stores in the United States, according to a statement announcing its 2021 company finances that was released March 18. The Hudson store will be the company's ninth in Massachusetts, and the first since one opened in Millbury last fall.

Earlier this year, privately held L.L. Bean reported 2021 net revenue of $1.8 billion, which was 14% higher than the previous year and what executives called "one of the most successful years in company history."

In recognition of the favorable finances, the company's board of directors approved a performance bonus of 20% of annual pay for its approximately 5,500 employees, comprised of a 12% cash bonus and an 8% 401(k) contribution.

The company started with a single product — a weather-proof boot — and has expanded to offer a variety of outdoor apparel and equipment.

With the addition of L.L. Bean, Highland Commons will become a bit of a hub for outdoor stores that are not particularly common in the area.

The shopping center is also the site of the first Cabela's — a Nebraska retailer that specializes in hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreation merchandise — to open in Massachusetts, in 2015.
