Universal Studios Japan will open its new Nintendo themed area on Feb. 4, the Osaka-based theme park said on Monday, after pushing back the opening from the summer due to the coronavirus outbreak. The "Super Nintendo World" area will feature Mario Kart races and other attractions based on Nintendo games, according to Universal Studios Japan. "Super Nintendo World" had originally been scheduled to open in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, which have also been delayed due to the pandemic.
Iran has begun a funeral for a recently killed scientist who founded the Islamic Republic’s military nuclear program in the early 2000s. An honor guard carried it to a podium where reciters read the Quran and other religious verses in an outdoor area of the Defense Ministry in Iran's capital, Tehran. Officials, including Defense Minister Gen. Amir Hatami, attended the ceremony, sitting apart from each other and wearing masks due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Higher natural gas futures prices for 2021 and a continued glut of crude oil are prodding U.S. shale firms to boost gas drilling and production. Shale producers are increasing spending on natural gas, a change from the past, amid forecasts for a 45% jump in gas prices next year compared to a 15% gain for Brent prices. The largest U.S. shale oil producer, EOG Resources, this month said next year it will start selling gas from 15 new wells from a newly discovered field holding 21 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Lionel Messi is the only Argentine to truly live up to being described as the next Diego Maradona so it was little surprise the Barcelona captain should dedicate his goal in Sunday's 4-0 Liga win over Osasuna to his late compatriot. Argentina's two iconic players may be contrasting characters but they shared many traits including a bond with Newell's Old Boys and the Barca captain removed his shirt to reveal the red and black of the Rosario club before pointing to the sky. Messi was born a year after Maradona captained Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986 in Mexico but he was at Newell's stadium as a fan in 1993 when Maradona made his debut for the club.
(Bloomberg) -- S&P Global Inc. is said to be in advanced talks to buy IHS Markit Ltd. for about $44 billion, combining two of the biggest data providers for Wall Street in what would be the year’s second largest deal.IHS Markit, which provides data, analytics and research was valued at $36.9 billion as of the close on Friday, after climbing to a record earlier in the week. The stock has risen 23% this year, compared with S&P Global’s 25% gain, giving it a market capitalization of $82.2 billion. An announcement could come as early as Monday, according to a person familiar with the matter, declining to be identified because the information isn’t public. Representatives for S&P Global and IHS Markit didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. The tie-up will draw comparisons to the London Stock Exchange Group Plc’s $27 billion agreement last year to acquire financial data provider Refinitiv. Shifts in how traders and investors process information have created opportunities for huge firms to seize on, if they can convince authorities to allow it. The LSE is still negotiating with European Union regulators over the deal.IHS Markit was itself created out of data provider M&A. IHS’s $9.8 billion acquisition of Markit in 2016 combined IHS’s information services with Markit’s indexes for financial products such as credit default swaps, just as electronic trading was feeding intense demand for sets of information.A deal between S&P and IHS Markit would be second only to the $56 billion set of transactions among China’s biggest oil and gas companies to sell their pipeline networks to a new national carrier, which were finalized in July.News of the potential deal was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. Bloomberg LP, the parent of Bloomberg News, competes with IHS Markit and S&P Global in providing financial analytics and information.Regulatory Scrutiny”That merger would be a shock, no doubt,” said Craig A. Huber, founder of Huber Research Partners LLC. Huber said competition issues could be a factor, given the potential overlap between the firms’ oil and financial data. “There could be some intense regulatory scrutiny,” Huber said.“I’m not sure if antitrust could be an issue since both are market data providers, so that could be a little tricky,” said Jin Rui Oh, director at United First Partners, an investment and advisory group that specializes in special situations. The deal would be all stock, the WSJ reported citing unidentified people. That’s not surprising, Oh said. He cited trends in other large transactions this year, as well as the similarities between the two companies in metrics such as price to earnings.(Updates with commentary from the seventh paragraph.)For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.

(Bloomberg) -- Stocks in Asia swung from gains to losses along with U.S. and European equity futures as investors monitored progress on the path to a coronavirus vaccine on the final day of a record month for global equities. Oil retreated.S&P 500 futures began the trading week higher, then slipped, as did Australian and Japanese shares. A gauge of the dollar extended its recent retreat to the lowest level since April 2018. Chinese equities outperformed as activity in the country’s manufacturing sector picked up faster than expected in November and the central bank unexpectedly injected funds into the financial system. Oil retreated after an OPEC+ agreement to postpone an output increase planned for January remained elusive before a meeting Monday. Gold dropped. On Sunday, U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams said the federal government hopes to quickly review and approve requests from two big drugs makers for emergency approval of their Covid-19 vaccines. Meanwhile, Reuters reported that the Trump administration is adding SMIC and CNOOC Ltd. to a blacklist of alleged Chinese military companies.Global equities are up 13% in November as positive vaccine news helped drive expectations that a global economic recovery can pick up in 2021, helping flows into companies with earnings more closely tied to a rebound in growth. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. expects a large proportion of the public across major developed economies to receive a vaccine by the middle of 2021, driving a “sharp pickup” in global growth. While New York City schools will begin to reopen Dec. 7, California cases rose to a record after Los Angeles and San Francisco imposed tighter restrictions.“As long as the trajectory in economic data is one for improvement, then there is room for the cyclical areas to outperform,” Nader Naeimi, a multi-asset fund manager at AMP Capital Investors Ltd., said on Bloomberg TV. “Those cyclical, value areas are likely to be beneficiaries of the environment we are going into post vaccine and more normalization.”A full meeting of OPEC and its allies will take place Monday, and unless an agreement is revised this week, they will restart about 1.9 million barrels a day of halted output threatening to undermine the recent surge in crude prices. These are some key events coming up:OPEC holds a virtual full ministerial meeting to make a final decision on whether a production supply hike should proceed as scheduled in January. The Reserve Bank of Australia holds a policy meeting on Tuesday.Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell testifies before Congress on Tuesday and Wednesday. The U.S. employment report on Friday is expected to show more Americans headed back to work in November, though at a slower pace than last month. Here are the main moves in markets:StocksS&P 500 futures dipped 0.6% as of 6:03 a.m. in Tokyo.
