Kylie Jenner was 16 when she learned she was famous: 'I realized what an influence I had'

Kylie Jenner is arguably the most famous of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, boasting the most Instagram followers out of all her siblings and functioning as the CEO, CMO and CCO of a $1 billion beauty brand, Kylie Cosmetics. But the 22-year-old wasn’t always at the forefront of her famous family until she became a teen with notable influence over others her age.

“I always knew my family was a big deal, but me, solo, probably around when my pop-ups started,” she told Harper's Bazaar about acknowledging her fame, before backtracking to an even earlier example. “Or when I started dyeing my hair blue and cut my hair off, and then everyone started dyeing their hair blue and cutting it off. And I was like, ‘Whoa.’ I realized what an influence I had. I was probably like 16.”

Kylie admitted that she doesn’t even know what it’s like “to not be famous or in the limelight” as a result of the attention that’s always been paid to her family members. The first being Caitlyn Jenner, who is an Olympic gold medalist.

“Even before the show, my dad always had an audience,” Kylie explained, “so I was always around that energy.”

However, the influence that each of the family members subsequently acquired once Keeping up with the Kardashians aired became apparent to Kylie when she started attending red carpets with her sister, Kim Kardashian. Kylie went on to say that the shared fame among the family helps to keep each of its members grounded.

“I think it’s a rare situation when your entire family is in the same position as you,” she said. “I think that has a lot to do with why we are still us. We all keep each other grounded. Kim or Khloé or Kendall can’t just start acting different one day. We all keep each other in check and support each other. I have their support, and I can always run to my mom or my dad or my sisters, and they all know what we’re going through.”

The mother of two-year-old Stormi Webster with her ex, Travis Scott, has already tried to get the toddler used to the dynamic of fame that Kylie herself has experienced her whole life— and the oddities that come with it.

“I’m just trying my best, even though she’s still little, to remind her how blessed we are and that this isn’t normal, the way we live. It’s just our life. People want to take pictures. I think she would feel differently if I was always covering her face like, ‘Don’t look!’”
