Past NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch took to Twitter on Monday to address a gun possession incident that led to his detainment in Mexico last month.

According to Busch's post, he has a valid concealed carry permit, but he was detained at an airport while vacationing with his wife Samantha in Mexico when a handgun was discovered during what Busch called a "routine screening at the airport."

"Discovery of the handgun led to my detainment while the situation was resolved," Busch said on social media. "I was not aware of Mexican law and had no intention of bringing a handgun into Mexico."

Busch apologized for his mistake in his Twitter post.

"I apologize for my mistake and appreciate the respect shown by all parties as we resolved the matter," he posted. "My family and I consider this issue closed."

Busch, who drives for Richard Childress Racing, raced in Sunday's Busch Light Clash at the L.A. Coliseum. He finished third.
