Kutztown University football ranked 13th in nation in Division II coaches' poll

Aug. 16—The Kutztown University football team is ranked 13th in the AFCA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll, which was released Monday.

The Golden Bears are the second-highest ranked team from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, behind division rival Shepherd, which is ranked sixth.

Two other PSAC schools, both from the West, are ranked in the top 25. California (Pa.) is ranked 21st and Slippery Rock 23rd.

Defending national champion Ferris State is ranked first and received all 30 first-place votes.

Kutztown, under coach Jim Clements, finished 11-2 last season in winning the PSAC East and PSAC championships. The Golden Bears, who finished eighth in last year's rankings, lost to Shepherd 30-28 in NCAA Division II quarterfinals at Andre Reed Stadium on a last-second touchdown pass. KU had beaten the Rams 37-29 on the road in the regular season.

Kutztown opens its season at Assumption on Sept. 3. The Golden Bears open at home against California on Sept. 10 at noon. They host Shepherd in this season's PSAC East opener on Sept. 24 at noon.
