Remember more than 20 years ago when Krispy Kreme opened its first location in the Des Moines metro? More than 2,000 customers lined up to get a first taste of the chain’s doughnuts. Customers still wait for that red neon "Hot Now" sign to flicker on, indicating a piping hot batch of glazed doughnuts are ready.

Now the Charlotte, North Carolina-based company plans to open its third location, a 2,000-square-foot doughnut shop at 210 Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines, on the west side of Jordan Creek Town Center.

On Tuesday, customers can start ordering doughnuts in shop, online or through the Krispy Kreme app for takeout or delivery.

This location hired 30 people.

Bonus for super fans: Krispy Kreme will randomly award 10 dozen lucky customers, that's 120 total, with a dozen free Original Glazed doughnuts every month for a year.

The West Des Moines store’s doughnuts will be made at the company’s Clive location.

The shop sells everything from strawberry iced and chocolate glazed to cream- or custard-filled, apple fritter and traditional cake doughnuts. Just this year, Krispy Kreme released three limited-edition flavors that use Biscoff cookie butter as icing, as a filling and as a topping with cream cheese frosting.

This location plans to be open Sunday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Krispy Kreme also has locations at 1880 N.W. 86th St. in Clive and at 810 E. First St. in Ankeny in central Iowa, as well as a location in Council Bluffs. That Ankeny location opened in 2018.
