Krispy Kreme offers a free donut to people who get vaccinated

As President Joe Biden ramps up the country's mass vaccination efforts, Krispy Kreme hopes to provide a sweet incentive for Americans to get a COVID-19 shot — a free glazed donut.

Beginning Monday, customers who show a valid COVID-19 vaccination card at any U.S. Krispy Kreme can receive a free original glazed donut throughout the remainder of 2021.

The company is also offering up to four hours of paid time off to help "encourage and enable their COVID-19 vaccinations, furthering the safety of team members and guests." To coincide with the launch, the donut chain is also delivering free doughnuts to select vaccination centers throughout the country in the coming weeks.

"We all want to get COVID-19 behind us as fast as possible and we want to support everyone doing their part to make the country safe by getting vaccinated as soon as the vaccine is available to them," the donut chain said in a release.

While the U.S.'s response to the pandemic started out chaotic, the world's largest economy is now well ahead of other major economies — most notably Europe — in inoculating the public. However, Krispy Kreme's offer underscores how pockets of skepticism about the COVID-19 shot have stoked fears about the U.S. reaching herd immunity.

According to NPR's COVID-19's Vaccine Tracker, since distribution in the U.S. began back on December 14th, more than 115 million doses have been administered, fully vaccinating over 40 million people or 12.3% of the total U.S. population.
