Simone Biles came into the Tokyo Games looking to make history, but a sudden and shocking change in fortune came after Biles' vault in the final of the team competition.

She and the US team earned a silver in the team event after Biles unexpectedly withdrew from the team final, citing her mental health. Russia won the team gold.

USA Gymnastics announced that Biles would be evaluated each day leading up to the individual and all-around competitions. On Wednesday, Biles withdrew from the all-around competition and on Saturday morning it was announced that she would not participate in the individual finals for the vault and uneven bars.

On Sunday, Biles announced that she will compete in the final for balance beam, the last chance she has to get an individual medal at the Tokyo Olympics. And medal she did, claiming the bronze medal in a performance that didn't win gold, but was the stuff of legend.

Biles is an American gymnast. She competed for the U.S. at the 2016 Rio Olympics and is a member of the Tokyo 2020 women's gymnastics team.

After bailing on her vault during the first round of the Olympic team finals, Biles withdrew from the team competition. Citing stress and her mental health, Biles told reporters "I'll usually persevere and push through things, but not to cost the team a medal."
