The Austin American-Statesman is Central Texas' leading source of daily news and Austin's only daily newspaper. Interns have historically played a crucial role in the Statesman's award-winning coverage of the area.

If you are looking to apply for an internship with the Statesman, please review some of the frequently asked questions about our program below or reach out to us directly at internships@statesman.com

Who can apply?

Undergraduate and graduate college students. Recent graduates may also apply. You don’t have to be a journalism or communications major, but college newsroom experience or a previous internship is a plus. We look for a strong desire to be a journalist and work samples that show talent and promise. Interns are required to have a valid driver’s license.

How do I apply?

Email us a resume, cover letter, three work samples (as either links or PDF) and at least two references with phone numbers. Your cover letter should say which department you’re most interested in working with (i.e. local news reporting), and which internship period you are applying for. Please address all correspondence to the Internship Committee.

Email your materials to internships@statesman.com.

When are applications due?

The deadline for applying for the spring 2024 internship program is October 31. Summer 2024 internship deadline is December 8.

What’s the news organization like?

The Austin American-Statesman delivers digital-savvy, breaking and in-depth coverage of Central Texas news, sports and entertainment. In 2021, our newsroom received more than two dozen awards from the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors, Headliners Foundations, Lone Star Emmys and more. We value how stories and content appear in both print and online and strive to engage our readers across all mediums.

Can you tell me more about your intern program?

During the fall and spring semesters, we select four part-time interns. During the summer, we have multiple full-time interns. All internships are designed for college students pursuing a career in journalism. All intern positions are paid.

Fall and Spring semesters: During the school year, we look for Central Texas college students interested in gaining experience in an active newsroom. Interns work in departments such as local news, state news, features, sports, photo/video and digital. The internship consists of 180 hours per semester (usually 15 hours a week for 12 weeks) and can accommodate the requirements of college credit.

Summer interns: From a nationwide pool of candidates, we select full-time interns seeking front-line experience in local news, state news, and features reporting. The summer program lasts 11 weeks and is full time, 40 hours per week.

What do interns do?

Interns will work alongside full-time staff members, pitching, reporting and creating content for our print and digital products. Though interns will be assigned to coverage teams, our goal is to foster an environment where students can develop their skills, and pursue their interests in a professional setting.

What’s Austin like?

What was once a sleepy college town has grown into a home to more than 50,000 University of Texas at Austin students, and thousands more attending area schools such as St. Edward’s, Southwestern, Huston-Tillotson and Concordia universities. Dubbed the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin hosts globally recognized events such as South by Southwest and Austin City Limits music festival. Numerous technology corporations like Google and Facebook also have offices in Austin. Residents and tourists can enjoy outdoor activities, local professional sports and a thriving dining and nightlife scene all located in the politically engaged capital city of Texas.
