New York Knicks rookie Trevor Keels has spent the majority of the season in the G League, and head coach Tom Thibodeau believes that experience will work wonders for the 42nd pick.

Keels, who is signed to a two-way contract, is averaging 13.5 points, 3.2 assists and 2.9 rebounds on 41.2% shooting from the field in 26 games with the Westchester Knicks. He has scored in double figures 18 times, including a season-high 27 points on Nov. 22.

He has logged just 57 seconds this season in the NBA as the team prioritized playing time for him with Westchester. The minutes in the G League will help him transition to the NBA and adjust to the competition level.

Thibodeau holds those minutes in the G League in high regard.

I think for any young player coming in, the actual playing is important. I think trial and error is a big part of learning so the more minutes you get on the court… We look at the G League in a very positive way because I think it is the second-best league outside of the NBA. When you’re getting that type of experience, that’s going to help you just continue to grow and learn. All of the things that you’re working on in practice, you can try them in the game and just focus on that improvement.

Keels entered the season highly touted for his defensive ability and potential to develop into a 3-and-D player. Though he is converting 32.5% from 3-point range, he has shown some improvement of late: He is shooting 45% (23-of-51) from beyond the arc since Jan. 11.

The assignments in the G League appear to be paying off for Keels, who has had some strong moments throughout the year. With some more improvement and development, Keels could eventually join the Knicks’ rotation.
