Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau announced that center Mitchell Robinson will make his preseason debut on Friday night against the Washington Wizards.

The 23-year-old big man has been working his way back from a foot fracture that required surgery at the end of March.

Robinson will come off the bench against Detroit, per Thibodeau, and he’s expected to play limited minutes in his first game action in nearly seven months.

“We’ll see where he is. He won’t play a lot, just get his feet wet, give us a baseline,” Thibodeau said. “This is the next step for him. Yesterday was really a good day, he scrimmaged quite a bit and felt great today, great in the shootaround, so it was good.

“It will be short, whatever it is. I want to see how he looks going up and down the court. So, just get his feet wet tonight.”

With Nerlens Noel still out with an injury of his own, Taj Gibson will get the start at center with Robinson coming off the bench.

In recent days, Robinson has amped up his workload, running and sprinting before scrimmaging with his teammates on the practice floor.

“We feel good about where he is,” Thibodeau said.

“Really, the way we’re looking at it is big picture, just when he’s ready to go, he’s ready to go. He’s had a bunch of progressions to get through to get to this point, and this is the next one, to play in a game. Then we’ll gradually add minutes as he can handle them and as his conditioning improves.”
